Top o' the Town By Don Quixote The Gazette today begins a weekly column of comment of motion picture people. The method of presenting this column will be different from the usual movie gossip and we believe will prove of interest to our women readers. The editor asks that if you like the column, you send us a penny post card, telling us so. Your response will determine the continuation of the column.—Editor's note. NITA NALDI might still have been "Blood and Sanding it" if a little item called diet hadn't slipped a painless knife into the back; but all the king's horses and all the king's men couldn't take potatoes from her table nor could they put her together again. Hollywood learned from from many such experiences there was more to a career than talent ... and there's no camera known more candid than a movie lens ... it gloats on the most trivial blemish, that's why both male and female stars today act like finicky spinsters when it comes to menu. Laws of dict are no longer laid Richards-Martin Dance Studio has Revue Anaheim students of the Richards-Martin studio, 719 N. Los Angeles street, participated in the annual revue given by the studio last Friday and Saturday evenings at Wilmington. Miss Maxine Beaver and Vern Waters Wed Saturday Miss Maxine Beaver, daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. H. F. Beaver, 214 E. Wilhelmina street, became the bride of Vern Waters, son of Mr. and Mrs. T. S. Waters, 120 E. Alberta street, last Saturday evening at the Wesley Methodist Episcopal church, South. Rev. Beaver, pastor of the church, assisted by the Rev. B. E. Adams; pastor of the Four Square Gospel church of Anaheim; read the ceremony. Music before the wedding was provided by Mrs. A. P. Machado, the bride's sister, who played a group of piano solos, and sang as a solo,"Because," Mrs. W. Cook and Mrs. K. A. Monteith; also sisters of the bride, sang "I Love You Truly," Clarence Williams played "O Promise Me" as a trumpet solo and Mrs. Clifford Elliott offered "At Dawning" as a whistling solo. A reception was held in the church parlors following the ceremony with guests being received by Mrs. Beaver and Mrs. Waters. Hollywood learned from many such experiences there was more to a career than talent... and there's no camera known more candid than a movie lens... it gloats on the most trivial blemish, that's why both male and female stars today act like finicky spinsters when it comes to menu. Laws of diet are no longer laid down by the studio. Each actor is his own prescriber and inveterate calorie mathematician. MARLENE DIETRICH after experimentation has evolved Hollywood's latest and most effective weight remery... It consists of two hard boiled eggs and two fresh, raw tomatoes three times a day for two days, the rest of the week—anything you wish... and shes still the De Milo of picture-ville. IDA LUPINO has followed the GARBO on a cooked food strike. No meat, no fish, just fresh fruit, raw vegetables and lots of water. According to Ida it's not only grand for the skin, the figure and the disposition; but superb for the morale... How close GARBO adheres to this formulae is still a question since "drive in" sandwich shops serve healthy looking steaks to people in great black limousines of ancient vintage... but, at least, raw carrots have made appearances in dressing rooms. SHIRLEY TEMPLE has been brought up on what Mrs. Temple terms a common sense diet since she was an infant. Careful study has reduced this menu to orange juice, cereal and one egg, usually coddled, for breakfast; two vegetables and baked potatoe for lunch; lamb, beef, fowl or liver and two more fresh vegetables at dinner... all with a minimum of salt and no pepper. An occasional venture into candy, ice cream or sake is permitted. DR. DAFOE'S menu for the QUINS is similar with the exception of a complete ban on sweets birthday cakes are for photographic purposes only. WALLY WESTMORE, a member of the Hollywood's famous House of Westmore, has laid down the following rules Lois Day, John Thomas Burch, Darelene German, Joan Krieger, Dickey Miller, Beverly Schug, Rosemarie Stewart, Jeanette Probert, Katherine Selover, Kathleen Matthies, Helen Rowan, Patty Norcross, Peggy Glieberman, Wanda Heppard, Junior Thomas, Bill Sather, Rose Louise, Milo, Teddy and Jean Gobovich, Ann Demscy, Dorothy Jones, Betty Mae Ellason, Dorothy Dietrich, Alice Kibele, Antoinette Kibele, Nancy Carter, Rosemarie Hennacy, Betty Archer; Beatrice Shapiro, Shirley Patterson, Rhoda Richardson, Marguerite Dietrich, Dorothy Brittan, Loraine Henderson, Mollie Ohashi, Eva Norcross, Marie Louise Jimenez, Frances Bowder, Maryann Esser, Teresa Regan. Mrs. Mary Ellis Celebrates 100th Anniversary The one hundredth birthday anniversary of Mrs. Mary Ellis of Cypress was celebrated yesterday afternoon with an informal party given at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Carrie Kight, with whom she makes her home. A large number of friends and relatives called at the house during the day to pay their respects and present the honored woman with gifts. Mrs. Ellis is a native of Circleville, Ohio, being the last of 11 children in the family. It was there she spent her childhood. She was married in Williamsburg, Ohio, to George Marion Ellis when she was 17 years of age. Five grandchildren live in California, three in Long Beach, one in Fresno and one in Riverside. She also has a great grandson. The centenarian enjoys good health, but recently her sight has become impaired, causing her to give up her recreations of reading, writing and sewing. Her hearing and memory are still acute and Miss Dorothy Williams of Fresno no attended the bride as maid of honor and Miss Lucille Eaton was bridesmaid. Alonza Ross, brother of the groom, served as best man and the ushers were Clifford Elliott, Walter Elliott, Richard Wise and James Taylor. A reception was held in the church parlors following the ceremony with guests being received by Mrs. Beaver and Mrs. Waters. Routine Business is Discussed by A. B. Paul, W. R. C.
