The German Methodist church celebrated "Children's day" on Sunday with exceedingly interesting exercises. The custom of setting this day apart was originated by the Methodists in 1873 and its observance has since become quite general. A number of Anaheim residents left this week and others are preparing to depart for the various fashionable watering resorts. Two estimates that the average yield of barley throughout the southern part of the county will be between 20 and 25 sacks to the acre. Grapes will soon be ripe, some berries are on the verge of maturing and a continuation of the recent warm weather will hasten the process. Our earliest variety is a small grape, the color of a muscat, but the size and shape of the mission. As high as twenty cents a pound is usually charged for the first grapes of the season. Residents on Los Angeles and Center streets are kept comfortably cool these hot days as these roads are sprinkled twice a day by Gade. Scarcity of work on farms in this vicinity at present has caused many farm laborers to leave for the northern part of the state. They propose to engage in harvesting in the San Joaquin valley where they receive $2.50 a day and board. They will doubtless return to this vicinity in the fall. Rev. D. Thompson of San Francisco, agent of the American Bible society will preach tomorrow (Sunday) evening at 7:30 at the German M. E. church, where a union meeting of all Protestant church in Anaheim will be held. Jackson, the west dairyman, is enjoying a visit his brother, George Jackson arrived Saturday from Glacier Scotland. The brothers had met since 1894, the date Mr. son left his old home in moreland county, England says his brother has come on a visit, but after testing climate and viewing the scenery of southern California he may decide to remain here. At the residence of Mr Johnston on south Claudina yesterday afternoon at 3 o'clock occurred the marriage of dearest Mrs. Maria Johnston. Pomona wants to incorporate like Santa Ana and Pasadena. Incorporation is somewhat like matrimony—alluring to those who have never experienced it. 25 Years Ago June 13, 1912 St. Boniface Catholic church was crowded far beyond its seating capacity at 10:30 last Sunday, at which time the Right Rev. Bishop Conaty administered confirmation to a class of about 150. Rev. F. J. Dave Hamler is receiving felicitations from his many friends on the announcement of his engagement to Miss Mable Gade, one of the city's most charming young ladies. The wedding will occur the latter part of the month. Joseph S. Hatfield was operated upon for appendicitis by Dr. Johnston at the Sanitarium on Friday, following a brief illness. Mr. Hatfield is resting comfortably and hopes are expressed for his speedy recovery. Grandma Schauman reached her 88th birthday on Sunday last, and was the honored guest at a family reunion and dinner at the home of her son, Tommy Deitrich. Chilly Fischer and Vic Lamont drove to Arcadia on Sunday and spent the day with Richard Krebs. Parson Markel brought in a load of fine cabbage on Monday and disposed of it at the grocery store at top-notch prices. Mrs. H. H. Hawley died at the family home south of town, after a short illness, on Thursday. She leaves a husband and two grown children. The funeral occurred on Tuesday last, Rev. Zeigler of the Methodist church officiated. T. H. Hollingsworth and family leave tomorrow for Portland, Oregon, where they will celebrate the golden wedding anniversary. State Fair Will Shatter Records California's 83-year-old state fair is being groomed to break even more records in 1937 than the record-shattering last year's fair. Robert Muckler of Hollywood, the new secretary-manager, has surveyed the prospects and declares every department is prepared to excel. Entries for the annual race classic include outstanding favorite horses from widely known tracks. Purses of more than $40,-000 are the greatest in the fair's history. A current hit from the New York Hippodrome, Lottie Mayer's Disappearing Water Ballet, has been obtained for the night show and will leave for London after filling the fair engagement. Arrangements are being made for outstanding agricultural and livestock displays. After considerable study, the song, "I Love You California" has been selected as the theme of the 1937 fair. The fair days are September 3 to 12. The California fair is the second largest state fair in America.
