Acts and Facts of Townsendism By Walter R. Robb (This is a non-political, non-partisan cultural dealing in Townsend news and views, and written by a prominent Townsend leader. Any opinions which are expressed herein are not necessarily those of the Gazette). Two important announcements were made in the nation during the week ending April 3. The first one by President Franklin Roosevelt and the second by Dr. Francis E. Townsend, founder of the Townsend Recovery plan movement. These two announcements coming as they did from the two outstanding individuals in the nation who are engaged in efforts to better the economic status of the average citizen are of great interest. Both of these men head powerful political forces and the loyalty of each group of followers to their respective leaders is remarkable. Both of these men seek through their movements equitable distribution of wealth to all citizens and the return of stable employment conditions in the nation. As yet neither of the movements have shown sufficient strength to enact into one process. In the morning they are assembled and prepared for cooking. Then, seven—or more, if you like—small jelly glasses are filled, each with one serving of food. In each of two jelly glasses, mother places 1 tablespoon of pulverized cereal, preferably a different kind in each glass, together with Everyday Cooking Miracles BY VIRGINIA FRANCIS Director Hotpoint Electric Cookery Institute The remarkable Thrift Cooker of the modern electric range simplifies the preparation of baby foods. A rigorous regime of milk, sunshine, fresh air, stewed fruits, and vegetables is almost guaranteed to make any youngster a radiantly healthy little being. And speaking of baby's stewed fruits, vegetables, and cereals, modern mothers are rapidly abandoning the obsolete, all-day method of baby food cookery in favor of the "seven-way infant diet by one-way cookery" made possible by the thrift cooker of the Hotpoint electric range. Tables Are Turned. A few years ago menu-making homemakers complained that they had to cook too much of everything. Now the tables are turned and it seems the objectors must cook too little of everything — possibly a "smidgin" of cereal, a handful of peas, and minute quantities of any of the other foods which comprise the very young baby's food repertoire. Let me tell you what this procedure is. By this miracle "seven-way" method of infant food cookery, the entire day's supply of vegetables, fruits, and cereals are cooked by equitable distribution of wealth and unemployment problems now paramount in the nation. Dr. Townsend has always contended that these problems result from a basic cause which is purely economic. He believes that technologically we have advanced production employed methods and that no adjustments of an economic nature have been connected up with our technological progress. It is his sincere belief and also that of his followers that the Townsend plan method is the needed economic adjustment and that unless its advocated principles are employed the suffering and distress of the depression will continue. Fundamentally the Townsend plan is a method of subsidizing consumers buying power. The Townsend philosophy is that the subsidized consumers buying power will result in such demand for goods and services which in turn will create sufficient demand for employees as will automatically solve the unemployment problem. The distribution of wealth problem will be solved through the high level of buying power in the hands of the retired Townsend annuitants and the better wages enjoyed by the army of the employed. Now that the President of the nation has reached a conclusion that greater buying power must be experienced by the working classes before desired objectives are obtained and is going to make further experiments to that end it looks like an opportune time to impress upon him the fine capabilities of the Townsend plan for achieving his desired ends. Hence the Townsend movement founder quick to sense the psychology of the moment moves his movement into high gear through his spectacular fund raising method and through an intensified public pressure from his movement on congress to give his plan consideration as a remedy. The Townsend founder believes the day rapidly approaches when the President in "Here is your party!" periments will now be undertaken in the hopes of better results. The other announcement was from Dr. Townsend and was to the effect that he was going to raise a five million dollar fund for the purpose of financing a campaign over the entire nation to put pressure on the present seventy-fifth United States congress to enact the Townsend bill into law now. The doctor's announced intention of raising this fund through borrowing it from his movement's followers in amounts of $10,000 and up on his own unsecured notes payable two years after date created a sensation both among his own followers and the general public. The largeness of the intended fund was startling to his followers and the public marvelled at both the faith of the doctor and the uniqueness of his intended method of raising the fund. The doctor and his followers have always believed that the Townsend method of financing consumers buying power would almost immediately solve both the THE BEST BABY CHICKS for chicks, turkeys and ducks is FEDCO (trade-mark Reg.) in 5 years over 5,000 poultrymen have started their babies for less loss, evener growth, better feathering, heavier bone and more meat. LEMON ST., ANAHEIM ANAHEIM GAZETTE Canal Lining Work On Aqueduct of Water District Is Complete Completion of all canal lining on the metropolitan aqueduct was reported recently to F. E. Weymouth, general manager of the Metropolitan Water district. Totaling 63 miles in length, this work constitutes one of the most important features of the 392-mile water supply project. Using machinery especially designed and built for use on the metropolitan aqueduct, construction crews have completed this phase of the work in record time and have covered more than 500 acres of canal surfaces with a lining of concrete eight inches thick. Canal sections on the giant aqueduct are all located in relatively flat areas of the desert between the Colorado river and the Hayfield pumping plant, which is about 40 miles east of Indio. The canals are 55 feet wide at the top, tapering of 20 feet in width at the bottom, and are 12 feet deep. They will carry a thousand million gallons of water daily. Because of the vast amount of material to be excavated and concrete to be placed in these canals many new types of equipment had to be developed to accomplish the work. One of these, a canal paving machine, lined as much as 950 lineal feet of canal in one 16-hour period. Construction of the canals was started in 1934 and has progressed on a 24-hour-a-day basis except during the summer months, when the extreme desert heat prevented the placing of concrete. Latest progress reports indicate that the entire aqueduct project is more than 60 per cent completed at the present time. It is expected to be put into operation in 1939, at which time it will bring water from the Colorado river clear across the state of California to the cities and areas in the water district. Correct this sentence: "Now," said she, "I have all the shoes I want." his desperateness for a remedy for the national ills will turn to the Townsend plan. For the Townsend plan from the east there begins to come the streakings which gives promise of a new day. Remember, too, an electric range automatically entitles you to the wholesale domestic rate which reduces the average cost of all the electricity you use. Shipping Laws are tightened by State Extreme importance to producers and shippers of California and vegetables is the ruling Arizona state agricultural laws that all fruits and vegetables shipped into Arizona must be new containers and must be canned by an official inspection certificate, says the bureau of land vegetable standardization at the California department agriculture. The ruling means, said bureau officials, that all shipments of apricots, apples, peaches, and other California deciduous fruits, as well as fresh vegetables of all kinds, must be ined at point of origin either county agricultural commissioner or the shipping point inspection service, and that the inspection certificates, setting forth the quality and condition of the shipment, must accompany the commodity when it moves into Arizona. The ruling also means that fruit and vegetable shippers of California will not be permitted to use reconditioned boxes if their products are to be shipped into Arizona. If the so-called democratic nations of Europe ever adopt a colored shirt, it will doubtless be yellow. But our biggest burden is that of supporting nine or ten divisions of government, and you can't blame the Supreme Court for that.
