Ray Ingels, director of the state motor vehicle department, announced today. With 305 fatalities in January and 206 in February, Ingels said, the total for the two months was 511, an increase of thirty-five deaths, or 7.35 per cent over the 476 killed in the same period last year. All rumors to the contrary are false. On April first Pacific Freight Lines was suddenly struck by a permeiated attack, on the part of some outside agitators, in an attempt to paralyze its operations. These agencies (there is more than one), are fighting among themselves, to obtain control of Pacific Freight Lines' employees. Their methods of attack are of the "dark alley" type, in their attempt to intimidate our men into joining one or another of these organizations. The management has never been directly approached by any of these agencies, has never been informed as to what their demands are and is absolutely in the dark as to why such unfair and certainly unwarranted attempt is being made, to jeopardize its operations. Pacific Freight Lines is the largest certificated motor truck transportation company in the State of California. Its operations were established under authority of the Railroad commission of this state, and its conditions of service and rate schedules are at all times under the jurisdiction of the commission. The owners of Pacific Freight Lines, who are its present operators, originally conceived and put into effect the now well-established store-door pickup and delivery motor freight transportation service. Until the first of April the company has never experienced labor troubles of any kind. Its present employees, including drivers and mechanics, have all been well satisfied and happy in their work, and have never made any complaint to the management, secure in the knowledge that their rates of pay were in excess of that in effect at other truck transportation companies in Southern California. Bidder's attention is called to the above mentioned statute which will require them if awarded the contract, to pay not less than said general per diem-rate of wages set forth in said Resolution hereinbefore mentioned, to all laborers, workmen and mechanics employed in the execution of the proposed contract.
