Achiever Program Captures Awards
The Orange County Junior Achievement program came in for a substantial share of the awards and recognition handed out at the-tenth annual Junior Achievement Future Unlimited Banquet held at the Hollywood Paladium.
More than 2000 Southern California teenagers and businessmen, representing Southland Junior Achievement companies, attended the annual recognition banquet last night.
The Junior Achievement program is a learn-by-doing activity, open to high-school sophomores, juniors and seniors, and designed to teach the advantages of the American free-enterprise systems, according to Al Halpren, manager of the local center.
He said more than $50 local teenagers have been active in the 17 individual Junior Achievement companies formed in this area during the past eight months.
At the awards dinner last night, top scholarship honors in the Southern California area went to William Doyle, a 17-year-old senior at Servite high school.
Doyle was awarded a $500 scholarship from KMPC, a $350 national scholarship from "Readers Digest", and a total $350 Junior Achievement scholarships.
Young Doyle, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul K. Doyle of Fullerton is president of his JA company.
Jon Peters, a 17-year-old junior at Orange high school, was one of two Southern Californians Achievers selected by the Berberly Hills and Los Angeles Regional Clubs as delegates to the National Junior Achievement Conference, to be held in August at the University of Indianapolis.
Peters is president of her JA firm and was a finalist in the county's president - or the - year contest. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert L. Peters of Orange.
Decaps, a Junior Achievement company counseled by Nortronics of Anaheim, was selected as one of four finalists in the Southern California company-of-the-year contest. Decaps will compete in the western regional finals in June.
C. Leo Gross, a member of Nortronics' management team and active in the local JA program since its inception here five years ago, was honored as the JA adviser with the most service.
At the dinner, seven of the 22 Executive Awards presented to Southern California Achievers were captured by teenagers from Orange County, Halpern said.
Local recipients of the Executive Award, highest individual award that an Achiever can earn, were Tom Rogers, 18, a senior at Orange high school; Suzi Weishaar, 16, a junior at Rancho Alamitos high school; Nancy Nesmith, 17, a junior at
