In the 1848 cholera epidemic in England, 54,000 died! Dr. John Snow, better known as the first professional anesthesiologist, studied available statistics and deduced that polluted drinking water spread the disease. The later incident of the Broad Street pump was a dramatic proof of his theory, gave impetus to the public health movement, and led to protected water supplies.
