what's doing?
Sing along with telephone service? Americans have been doing it ever since the telephone was born...an event cheered by the rousing "Telephone March." Soon young swains were singing, "Hello, Central, Give Me Heaven." And phoning got so popular the girls had to remind them that "A Ring on the Finger is Worth Two on the Telephone." Overseas service was commemorated with a toe-tapper entitled, "Hello, Hawaii, How Are You?" Well, those are some of the oldies we've run across. These days, I understand, they're singing to our communications satellite "moon" with something called "Help Me, Telstar!" So telephone progress and the songs about it are still going strong.

Voters in California are faced with another monstrous decision this fall — whether to approve about $800 million in state bonds.
Spread over three separate issues, school construction, beaches and parks and state building projects, the bonds will be up for approval in the November general election.
Many people fear another disastrous negative vote such as two years ago in the primary election when too many issues and too much money were at stake.
On top of this year's proposals is a threatened initiative by the California Teachers' Association to place another $200 million decision before the voters for increased school aid.
I am inclined to believe, however, that this may be the beginning of the end for large scale bond plans in California. We will be reaching the point where we will be paying interest only because that's all we will be able to afford to budget.
I feel the legislature will take a good look at pay as you go plans in the next few years where we will budget so many millions of dollars each year for specific projects, aid or loans. I wish we could have done that in the first place.
VACATIONING AT THE NEW YORK WORLD'S FAIR?
If you're planning a trip to see the New York World's Fair you'll enjoy visiting the Bell System exhibit there. It features a spectacular moving-chair ride through the history of communications.
You'll also see a demonstration of the "Picturephone". It is the Bell Laboratory's latest answer to more complete communication between distant points. At various times during the day Picturesque calls are made from New York World's Fair to our Bell System exhibit in Disneyland. Who knows, you may see and hear some "home folks" on one of these calls!
Want to get the correct time? Call a ship at sea? Talk to our business office? Check the front pages of your phone book for the numbers to call and other helpful information about your telephone service.
WHAT TO DO IF ANYTHING EVER GOES WRONG WITH YOUR TELEPHONE.
Your telephone is built to take it. It has only one reason for being and that's to give you dependable, trouble-free service year after year after year. But, if anything should go wrong we'll gladly fix it without extra charge. All you have to do is call the "repair service" number listed in the front of your phone book. Often, we can take care of the problem from our telephone central office. If necessary, we'll send someone out. Whatever the case, you'll never get a bill for repairs. This is one of the values that go with your service.

DELMAR; DEL., BI-STATE WEEKLY: "The nation has a right to ponder the fate of the leader of its largest labor union, recently convicted by a jury of trying to tamper with another jury . . . It is difficult to believe that a majority of the million and a half members of the union can conclude that the jury which convicted Hoffa was fixed or unfair. If Hoffa has to serve his sentence, we suspect that in time the majority of substituting this emotionalism for sober judgement and the good of the country and the democratic system we all enjoy."

'PROM' TIME
I've never met a syndicated cartoonist who signs his wrist Salo, but I'll make a smiley wager he has a teen-age son.
Why? Because of the fear he put into a cartoon I saw other day, as though the involved was close to his head and pocketbook.
The cartoon showed an father, disturbed by his crew son while reading his news per. The caption said:

Annual sessions would bring the same results.
This year while we were in a stalemate over the budget, the governor put 58 items on the special session list, all of them quite important. And the governor indicated some 300 more requests had come to him begging to be put on the special call.
He has quite a decision to make in determining which ones to legislate this year in special session. Talk about arbitrary decisions...
Everywhere you go you hear people asking "when do we go home or when will the session end? Then somebody relays the latest rumor.
The best comment I heard the other day was: "Well, if they sent all the lobbyists home, cut off the per diem, and agreed on a budget, they'd all be home tomorrow."
LAW IN ACTION
LAW AND EQUITY
American law comes largely from the English Common law which began in the Middle Ages. It grew out of court decisions spread over centuries.
In theory, the King's judges sought merely to discover and back up community practices and custom.
In practice, the judges now and then had to select some customs and reject others. The next judge with a like case often followed the first judge, though he might override him and work out a new legal "doctrine."
Flexibility, one of the Common Law's best features, thus around thirty a diner table long or short formal? Can you have the family car for the dinner before the prom? Must buy her a corsage. Quently he has the cost of renting a white coat and dress trousers. Also, there's the question of transportation, including the gasoline for the family car. By the time he has shelled the money for all the other items, however, the gasoline is the merest pittance.
On the other side of the leeer, the girl has her share of costs. There's the new dress, the biggest item on the expense sheet. Long gloves, — the kind of thing she weave out of the dresser draw until next year's prom.
And the hairdo. Oh my, yeh the hairdresser!
As an added small touch there's a small flower for boy's jacket. Maybe new shirt Etc. etc. etc.
This matter of boy's cost against girl's costs could be gued at great length, without clearcut answer. No matter how you look at it, though, the final prom has done more to stimulate the flow of money through local channels than anything since the tax cut.
Despite the problems, the traditional prom remains a cozy event, an exciting opportunity for teen-age boys and girls on their best behavior to s

COSTLY DEBUT
If there remains any rumble
of financial discontent among
local fathers, even after seeing
the happiness that prom night
generates among their offspring, I remind them that
worse things might happen.
Their daughters might want
to make formal debuts into society, for example.
Recently I saw a report by
the publisher of the Debutante
Register, John E. Jackson, concerning the costs and problems
of bowing officially into society.
Far from diminishing in numbers, as I had assumed, the
number of American girls who
have formal debuts has been increasing each year.
Approximately 3,000 of them a
year go through the procedure,
either in group debuts or the
more exclusive and costly private parties, he reports.
Dad, you think the prom cost money? Well, Jackson reports that the average private debut costs $25,000!

I've heard debated whether it costs a boy or a more to attend the prom. Fact that in the long run parents usually pay is a issue.
