150 Youngsters Readying Series of
More than 150 youngsters, ranging in age from six to sixteen will be "trodding the thes-pic boards" out at Melodyland Theatre beginning Dec. 26, when a series of three children's plays opens a two-week run.
The youngsters, all students in the Children's Theatre Division of the Orange County Performing Arts Foundation, headquartered at the theatre, are in the casts of a trio of children's literary classics, "Sara Crew," 'The Princess and the Swine-herd,' and "Little Women." Needless to say they'll be costumed in rags in their roles as peasants and in riches as princes, princesses and other representatives of the aristocracy.
Guiding the destiny of this community - wide, juvenile venture is Miss Queenie Smith, former Broadway musical comedy star now recognized as one of the country's outstanding coaches of young talent.
Having started her professional career as a teenage premiere danseuse with the Metropolitan Opera Company, Queenie went on to new triumphs in the musical theatre in such shows as Vincent Youman's "Hit The Deck," George Gershwin's "Tip Toes," and others; then came on to Hollywood to appear in over two dozen major films including 'Show Boat,' "Snake Pit," "Sweet Smell of Success," etc.
In explaining the purpose of the Orange County Performing Arts Foundation, which she directs, Queenie stresses the fact that it is a non-profit enterprise primarily designed to inculcate in youngsters an early interest in the theatre, and to encourage those with talent and dramatic ambitions.

Plans for future productions will be measured by the public support for the initial series. Miss Smith said.
