2—The Anaheim Gazette Thursday, December 18, 1962 ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA Educator to Head Fund Drive For North Orange County’s ‘Y’ T. Stanley Warburton, Southern California educator, has agreed to serve as General Chairman of the $520,000 Capital Fund Campaign, Feb. 4-24, for the YMCA of North Orange County. Dr. Walburn, now assistant superintendent of schools for Los Angeles, formerly served as superintendent of the Fullerton secondary school system, of the campaign executive committee, announced the appointment of the educator at the same time as the names of the other members of the citizens' volunteer committee were released. Included in the campaign group are Ben T. Anderson, H. L. Brittain, Irwin C. Chapman (big gifts chairman), Howard R. Dentz (president, board of directors), Emory Hines, Ross Holson, William Hogue, Earl Hudgins, M. D. Johnson, Ray Johnson (chairman, campaign public relations), Robert H. Johnson, Leland Launer, Walter J. Pray (chairmen, team organization), and Dr. H. Lynn Shelter (president-elect, Board of Directors). Headquarters have been established at 115 W. Wilshire Ave. in Fullerton. Plans are now underway to solicit the support of the North Orange County region for the drive. The $520,000 will be used to expand and equip the new building, pay off the encumbered debt, and acquire two new branch sites. This is the next phase of a program of action conceived and initiated by the YMCA Board of Directors in 1959 to offer adequate services for the youth of the national materials, church jiaison, and many other activities of the capital fund drive are now being organized February's "big push," according to YMCA leaders. MORE ABOUT ... Band Fund Drive (Continued from Page One) The title is an honorary one, and doesn't prove much by itself, but the band has furnished some pretty clear proof that the title is an accurate one, by appearing in competition events seven times this fall, and outscoring every Orange County band, in every event, every time out. The band has also set a new standard for itself in scoring the highest score ever by an AHS band in a major band review, the highest marching score ever and the highest showmanship score ever by an AHS band in a major competition event. In the seven competition events that the band entered, both parade and half-time competition, they scored higher in six of them than any Anaheim High band in the past. Outstanding Drill Team The Drill Team, under the direction of Mrs. Frances Pitts also had its best year ever, with outstanding results in all their events. In every parade that had a separate class for the drill teams, they took either first place, or the sweep-stakes. Where they were scored as a part of the band, they always received excellent com- the First in Class AA Band Second in Beach Parade Another major parade was held in Huntington Beach. The Band took second in their cla-missing first place by five hredths of one point. Saturday the band and dr-team placed Second Runner-Up (third place) at the Coro-Band Jamboree. This event was an invitational competition to the top ten bands in Southe-California (according to the Chamber of Commerce), and is a top event. This was the highest an Orange County Band has ever finished, and the band had the highest marching scores of a group in the competition. Our district was also represented by Loara High School, which finished eighth. MORE ABOUT ... WHAT'S DOING Dorethy Kral, Manager One of today's most familiar Christmas sights came into being for a very good reason. Many years ago, a child upset a candle on the Christmas tree of Ralph E. Morris, a telephone man in Boston, Mass. Fortunately, Morris was able to smother the flame and save the child from injury. But he decided right then that candles had to go. Next day, he bought a handful of switchboard-type lamps. Then, working evenings at home, Morris soldered the little lights to a pair of wires. The result: the first electric lights for a Christmas tree—an idea that made holidays safer for everyone. Special Price On GAS LOGS See them glowing in Our Store 88 Sizes & Styles to Select From. ALAN BOAL, high school junior, is this year's president of the Junior Achievement Company under the guidance of Pacific Telephone. Alan and about 20 other Orange County boys and girls have formed a teen-age corporation called Dyna-Craft. Their products are a soap novelty and an expandable garment hanger for use in automobiles. Pictured here, Alan discusses his Company's production and sales results with A. V. Jones Jr., Division Plant Manager, Pacific Telephone. And new, all of us at Pacific Telephone want to wish you the best of this holiday season. We hope that the coming year will be a happy one for you in every way. We've enjoyed serving you during the past year. And, to show our appreciation for the privilege, we'll be working even harder to bring you the best possible service throughout the new year. Pacific Telephone Splitting Of Phone Book Asked Pacific Telephone has proposed a new localized directory plan which would split the Orange County phone book into five separate volumes. In an application filed with the California Public Utilities Commission, the company said the current 2,134 page directory has tripled in size since 1953, and is becoming too thick to bind and too burdenome for customers to handle. The new directory plan would go into effect next November, if approved by the PUC. Santa Ana and Orange exchanges would be contained in one directory. Alignment The other books would be aligned as follows: —Fullerton, Brea and Placentia. —Anaheim, Buena Park and Garden Grove. —Newport Beach-Costa Mesa. —San Clemente and Capistrano Valley. The company said its proposal was based on extensive research, including a survey taken by Facts Consolidated, an independent research organization. In addition to being more compact, the new directories would have larger, easier-to-read type. APPOINTMENT of M. F. Essenmacher, manager of the Anaheim office of First Federal Savings of Alhambra, as an assistant vice president and promotion of eight other officers by the board of directors was announced by A. G. Kruse, president of the association. Customers who desire directories of neighboring communities could obtain them without charge from their business offices. An application card for ordering additional directories would be included in each new directory.
