6—The Anaheim Gazette Thursday, December 5, 1963 ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA Schools Open Predict Bleak Year for Rebels A bleak year for the Savanna Hoopsters has been forecast by Rebel mentor John Fransen as they opened the 1963-64 season with a in their opening tilt with Western High School Tuesday. Fransen has only two returning lettermen his year upon which to base his Crestview title hopes, something that he feels is a long way from becoming true. In addition to returning men Bill Brackney and Stan Newton, both seniors, Fransen has eight prospects from the Jay Vees and 2 from the “Bee” squad of last year, plus two men who recently reported from football for a total of eleven men. Brackney will be one of the five starters this season seeing action as a forward while Newton will start as a guard. Others going out for the basketball include Doug Bell, guard 6’, senior; Norris Carey, forward, 6'4”, junior; Dennie Cummings, guard, 5’10”, senior; Mike Davis, forward, 6'2”, senior; Donn Fisher, center, 6'5”, junior; Stephen Fitch, forward, 5'11”, senior. We've been to so many football games this year we couldn't care if they ever played again. As the season wore on we got so that the only reason we brought our binoculars to the games was to get a better view of the cheer and song leader. Man what a view too! This year's pep leaders were the best we've ever seen. By the end of the season the only reason we attended the games was to watch the pep leaders and cute drill team members parade on field. Seriously though, Anaheim can be proud of the fine teams and the excellent jobs the coaches did this year. It isn't every city that can boast of three teams in the CIF playoffs. Our hats are off to the coaches and their boys for a fine effort and some of the best football seen in Anaheim in years. Basketball and wrestling are For the Sports Department of the Gazette, these sports present us with several problems. Our press deadline is Tuesday noon at the latest and most games are played in the evenings on Tuesday's and Friday's. Now who wants to read about last Friday's defeat the following Thursday after they've had a victory Tuesday afternoon? This also means pictures will be too old to use as well. However, this department always comes through by hook or by crook, so we'll swing it somehow. In the meantime however though, we'll be there at all sports events throughout the city and county thus bringing you the latest possible on all possible events. That just about does it for another week. Remember, if your team loses, don't blame the players, the coaches, the referees, that's just the way the ball bounces. You can't win 'em all. Chapman College's Panther seeking their seventh NCAA basketball tourney bid in eight years, open their season this Friday. Having lost two starting players and its head coach off last year's team which finished as runner up to NCAA Pacific Coast champion Fresno State the crippled Panthers are hoping they have filled the gap. Graduating last year we 1962 All-American forward Gary Larson and forward Larry Beard. Head coach and athletic director Don Perkins is lost to the team for the remainder of the season because of a heart attack suffered last month. Aistant varsity coach Don Lingston, Perkin's starting guild first semester last season, has taken the reigns. Coach Livingston has placed Larson with junior Lars Mitcheltree. Mitcheltree stands 6-5 and proved he can provide scoring punch by netting 15 points, playing only part of the frosh-varsity game Nov. 26. Sophomore Joe Cucinella was started the frosh-varsity game is expected to fill the other feld spot. Cucinella was outstanding player on the free man squad last season but lacked experience with the varsity. Though only 6-2, Cucinella has an excellent jump and can stunt the ball coming down the center. The Panthers go into the La Beach fracas with its season center Jeff Cotwright, high school from last year and named the NCAA all-regional team. Guards Tim Sweeney and Woody Deitch return to the lily-up but they'll be hard press by sophomore guard Phil de Seriously though, Anaheim can be proud of the fine teams and the excellent jobs the coaches did this year. It isn't every city that can boast of three teams in the CIF play-offs. Our hats are off to the coaches and their boys for a fine effort and some of the best football seen in Anaheim in years. Basketball and wrestling are now upon us as well. Sizing up the various teams in the city, it looks as though Anaheim may be able to boast of sending even more teams to the CIF playoffs in Basketball and wrestling. However, it isn't just their efforts alone that can do it. They need YOU. YOUR SUPPORT. YOUR attendance at a their games and matches both on the road and at home. It is always disappointing to us to note the lack of attendance at these events after the football team fills La Pama Stadium with 10,000 plus ardent supporters. It is also disappointing to the kids themselves. Why don't YOU attend your local high schools basketball contest tomorrow evening. And what better way to see all five high school wrestling teams and many others than to attend the fifth annual, Invitaional, Western High School Wrestling Tourney all day Saturday? Basketball Leagues For Adults Forming Applications are now being accepted for the 1963-64 Adult Basketball leagues sponsored by the Anaheim Park and Recreation Department, according to Dave Sommers, Recreation Supervisor. Games ill be 7:00, 8:00 and 9:00 P.M. "We're also forming a Woman's Basketball League for Monday nights", Sommers said. "Last year, we had four teams but this year we expect at least six teams before the program begins." Any group is eligible to form team for the appropriate league. Team rosters must have a minimum of 10 players and a maximum of 15 players. Gyms are available for three practice games in December. Lead play will begin in January. Little is known about the Long Beach entry except it has an improved team over last year with added experience and some outstanding new prospects. The Panthers beat the 49ers in both encounters last season. The fresh squad, rated by some as one of the best in Chapman cage history, opens its season 8 p.m. tomorrow at Southern California College. The fresh looked good in a 98-66 loss to the varsity in their annual preseason encounter. Starting lineup will be forwards Sam Edison and Greg Cook, center Ken Halliburton and guards Dave Salisbury and Bob Steward. Drysdale Unable to Beat Phillies Don Drysdale went into the 1963 season with a 13-game personal winning streak against the Phillies. So, what happens? That was the only club he didn't beat. He had six shots against them. On the final day of the season, trying for victory No. 20, Don left the game, leading the Phillies, 1 to 0, after five full innings. But his reliever failed to defend the margin — so Don had to be satisfied with a 1-to-0 decision over the Yankees for his twentieth triumph of the campaign. LBCC RECORD SET All - American fullback Homer Williams of Long Beach City College, who gained 169 yards and scored 26 points against El Camino has become Long Beach City College's all-time rushing and scoring leader over a two-year period.
