Homemakers' Questions
Tufts in Carpets, Refreezing Food:
By DOROTHY WENCK
Orange County Home Advisor
Q. I have been shopping for new carpeting and have become very confused by all the different kinds available. How can you tell which carpet is the best buy for the money?
A. Sometimes when we buy carpeting we are interested mainly in the color and pattern and how it will look in our home. However, we should also be concerned with how long the rug will last, whether it can take the kind of traffic it will be getting, and how easily it can be cleaned.
The kind of fiber in the carpet has a lot to do with wearability and ease of cleaning. Cotton carpeting, for example, wears well but tends to soil easily and is sometimes difficult to clean. Wool wears well and cleans easily but may be attacked by carpet beetles. Nylon and acrylic fibers wear well but are not resistant to oily stains.
Besides the kind of fiber, we should also look at the amount and closeness of the tufts and the firmness of the backing.
The more tufts per square inch the better a carpet will wear. Bend the carpet right side up. If there is very noticeable space between the tufts, the carpet will not wear well. Backing yarns should be strong and tightly woven. A plastic or latex rubber backing adds strength.
Q. We accidentally left some frozen foods out of the freezer overnight. Is it safe to refreeze these foods?
A. Whether or not its safe to refreeze thawed foods depends on several things. First of all, it depends on the kind of food. Fruit or fruit juices will not become dangerous to eat if they are thawed and refrozen, although they may not taste as good.
Vegetables, meats, poultry, fish, and products containing bloom and you won't have any problem choosing the one you like best. Trouble is, you'll like them all best.
For garden use, the cymbidium is best left in its pot, where it will usually grow happily for some three or four years before it asks to be divided and renetted. Root drainage is the only wearability and ease of cleaning. Cotton carpeting, for example, wears well but tends to soil easily and is sometimes difficult to clean. Wool wears well and cleans easily but may be attacked by carpet beetles. Nylon and acrylic fibers wear well but are not resistant to oily stains.

Even in the orchid world, which is crammed with exotic blooms, the lovely cymbidium is a standout. And when we consider how easy it is to grow here in Southern California, we really count our blessings.
Cymbidiums are often grown right out in the open in Los Angeles and surrounding areas. And while they have been known to freeze in exceptionally cold years, the California Association of Nurserymen says they are hardy down to the freezing point, at least. Below that, they should have some protection.
The thing that makes cymbidiums something special for your garden or for your glass house, is the tremendous display of blooms they produce. Long sprays with anywhere from a dozen to two dozen exotic orchids are commonplace in the cymbidium world. And some plants have been known to produce as many as three dozen flowers on a single spray! Talk about productivity.
You can check these orchids out this month in C.A.N. nurseries, for they are at the height of their bloom right now. Whatever bloom you buy them with will last for several weeks on the plant or cut for corsages. Once cut, they last longer if kept in the refrigerator when not in use.
The cymbidium's waxy blooms are found in several unusual colors, with yellow and green tones predominating. Bronze shadings, as well as pink and white colors are also available. Shop for them in

For garden use, the cymbidium is best left in its pot, where it will usually grow happily for some three or four years before it asks to be divided and repotted. Poor drainage is the only serious threat, so don't sink the pots in a soggy ground.
At repotting time, you can simply use leaf mold and peat moss, mixed in equal parts with sandy loam. This provides the acid soil conditions necessary for the cymbidium's well being. Your C.A.N. nurserymen will help you repot, if your need advice.
