Injuries
Plague
Santa Ana
SANTA ANA — Even though Santa Ana College basketball coach Bob Wilhelm has yet to face one league opponent, he's finding all sorts of trouble from another type of foe — injuries.
That old nemisis, injuries, has aided three Don hoopsters from practice sessions. The culprit has downed Jim Beal, Dick Barnard and George Winters.
"Beal suffered a shoulder separation which will probably keep him out all year," Wilhelm mournfully stated. Beal, a guard, played his high school ball at Santa Ana, where Wilhelm coached before coming to SAC this year.
Winters, out with an ankle injury, won't be able to play until February. Wilhelm reported. The new Don mentor had figured Winters, who played one year at Redlands University, to be the center on the Don's first team.
Dick Barnard, from Mater Dei High, will be out of commission for at least a month. Wilhelm reported. Up to his injury Barnard was battling Terry Klaus for one of the first team guard spots.
Wilhelm, who coached Sammy Saint to two Sunset League matches, moved to the semi-finals to play Long Beach Poly which defeated El Rancho 27-20.
Anaheim stayed in the game throughout the first half pushing one potential scoring drive down to the Muir seven on a 18 yard pass play from quarterback Dick Hough to end Ron Clayton. But penalties stalled the push and the Colonists never threatened again.
At the start of the second half neither team could maintain a drive but midway through the quarter Muir took the ball on its 17 and moved 83 yards in 16 plays.
Eating up most of the quarter, halfback Cliff Coker scored from one yard out on an off tackle slant with 1:15 left in the period. Highlight of the drive was a 20 yard pass play from quarterback Kelly Whitehill to end Jewell Akins going to the Colonist 38. The PAT was made good by Cliff Tollefson and Muir led 7-0.
In the fourth period, Anaheim tried desperately to catch up. The Colonists took to the air but an alert Mustang secondary and a hard rushing line harried Anaheim’s receivers and pressured quarterback Hough into rushing his passes.
The second Muir touchdown was set up by an Anaheim gamble. Attempting to make first down on a fourth down situation and failing Muir took over on its own 45.
The Mustangs marched the distance in seven plays helped along by three Anaheim penalties. Halfback Michael Johnson scored on a 25 yard pass from quarterback Kelly Whitehill. The touchdown came on a fourth down play with only 3:42 remaining in the game.

Excellent Prospects For 1963 Pheasant Season Reported
prospects for the 1963 pheasant hunting season are the best years, the California Department of Fish and Game said this week.
pheasant brood counts taken July of this year showed in numbers of broods average brood size, and other conditions since then been favorable for good survival.
The season runs from Nov. 23 through Dec. 8 in all of California except Imperial and east Riverside counties, where season extends from Nov. through Dec. 22.
Statewide shooting hours from 23. Dec. 8 are 8 a.m. to p.m. For the balance of the season in Imperial and eastern Riverside counties, shooting hours from Dec. 9 through 22 be from one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset.

Hunters are cautioned that pheasant hunting areas on private land and they urged to obtain permission from the landowner before hunting on private property. Hunters also are urged to consult 1963 hunting regulations book for information and laws affecting pheasant hunting.
Following is an area by area map of pheasant prospects compiled by the DFG.
Siskiyou and Modoc County
Casta Valley, Siskiyou County
West Side — Pheasant numbers are judged to be double that of last year in the better pheasant producing areas. Except for the extreme west edge of the pheasant belt and the solid rice belt area, hunting prospects are excellent. The Bayless district, Hamilton City, Orland, and Butte City areas in Glenn County and the Grimes-Sycamore area and local hot spots in the Williams and Maxwell areas in Colusa County should be the best bets.
East Side — Population up in central and western Butte County over the last three years. Numbers above average east of Highway 99 and south of Gridley, but limited by lack of habitat. Good hunting expected in Sutter County particularly near the Sutter Bypass.
Delta
Brood counts and observations indicate that pheasant populations will be above 1962. Hunting should be above average unless weather conditions prevent the harvesting of crops, in which case landowners will not allow hunters on their fields.
San Joaquin Valley
Reproduction has been excellent with above-average brood sizes. The Merced Sportsmen have reared approximately 1,500 pheasants for release on private land in the Merced area, which will be open to the public.
pheasant production is poor, and hunting will be spotty, except in the Honey Lake State Game Area, which had a phenomenal hatch against this year. Prospects there are that hunting should surpass last year, which was excellent.
Upper Sacramento Valley
Best hunting will be in the Tehama-Corning area, Vina, and the Kirkwood district. Pheasant production was excellent and hunting prospects are rosy.

released in the Owens Valley and Imperial Valley areas which are open to the public.
Co-ops
Six pheasant co-ops open to the public will be operated by the DFG this year. They are Grimes, Ryder Island, Tyler Island, Staten Island, Sherman Island, and Firebaugh.
A reservation system will be used on Staten, Tyler, Sherman, and Firebaugh, for the opening weekend only.
The deadline for applying for an application was Nov. 14. Hunters with reservations on the opening weekend must present them at the check station by 6 a.m. of the shoot day to have the reservations honored. Those who do not present their reservations will be replaced with hunters from the first come, first served line.
Other hunters from this line will be allowed to replace those who finish hunting and leave the area. After the opening weekend, hunting will be on a first come, first served basis. This system will apply at Grimes and Byer throughout the season.
Waterfowl Management Areas
Hunting for pheasants will be allowed every day of the season on state waterfowl management areas, on a fee basis of $2 per day.
Waterfowl hunting reservations will be honored during the pheasant season on Saturdays, Sundays, Wednesdays, and holidays. On non-waterfowl shooting days hunting will be open on a first come, first served basis.
Federal Areas
On National Wildlife Refuges, pheasant hunting will be limited to Saturdays, Sundays, Wednesdays, and holidays, except for the Sacramento Refuge where pheasant hunting will be on weekends only. Water fowl national refuges will be protected every day of the phi-cean season. No permits or fees required.

Dodgers Reveal Unusual Home Game Schedule
E. J. Bavasi, Vice-President and General Manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers, today announced one of the most unusual home schedules in Dodger history for the 1964 National League campaign.
Eighty-one Dodger Stadium games will be distributed over seventy-seven dates and nine home stands. No stay at Dodger Stadium will include more than thirteen games and even that "long" stand will be played on twelve dates as it includes one of the four Sunday doubleheaders on the 1964 schedule.
The World Champions' home games will be broken down into stays of seven, six, eleven, ten, six, eleven, thirteen, ten and seven games. The 1963 schedule of the Dodgers included only seven home stands.
59 Night Games
Fifty-nine night games, one Saturday twilight game, four Saturday afternoon games and thirteen Sunday afternoon dates, including four doubleheaders, will be played.
Night games will begin at 8 p.m., the twilight game of Saturday, April 18, with the Reds will start at 6 p.m. and all afternoon dates either single or
Appropriately, Walt Alston's Dodgers will swing into action against the team which gave them the roughest run for the money down the pennant stretch in 1963. The getaway series consists of a pair of night games, April 14-15, with the St. Louis Cardinals. One of the Sunday doubleheaders (Aug. 16) also involves the Redbirds.
One Holiday Date
The Dodgers have one Holiday date at home during the season. They'll host Casey Stengel and his New York Mets the night of Saturday, July 4. Their Memorial Day and Labor Day activity will be on the road.
Willie Mays and the San Francisco Giants open the Dodgers' second home stand with a night game on Friday, May 1. The Giants will be at Dodger Stadium for two weekends in 1964. Their second week-end visit falls on July 24-25-26 and the final trip here for the Candle-stickers involves three night games Aug. 24-25-26.
The four Sunday doubleheaders include May 17 with the Pittsburgh Pirates, June 14 with the Milwaukee Braves, July 19 with the Chicago Cubs
