2—The Anaheim Gazette Thursday, December 5, 1963 ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA Bank Has County Directory A comprehensive 47-page booklet containing important data about Orange County — its cities and communities — has been completed by the research department of Security First National Bank. Previewed at the recent Orange County Industrial Conference held at Disneyland Hotel, the booklet is now available, free of charge, to the public at any of Security Bank's 24 branches in Orange County. Designed to acquaint new families with the County, the booklet also contains interesting facts and figures for those established residents who wish to know more about the area in which they live. Featuring maps, the booklet's information includes home prices, tax rates, utilities, sites of educational and recreational facilities, hospitals and shopping areas. DECISION DAY — Principal owners and Project Coordinators for the $18 million Sheraton-Anaheom Hotel have their plans ready for submission to the Anaheim City Planning Commission. The 22-story hotel project will have 750 rooms, will be located on 10 acres just north of Disneyland. The Office of Naval Research has awarded Autonetics a one-year, two-program contract to grow cerium dioxide and magnesium oxide laser crystals. Lasers rae devices which, by focusing rays into a cigarette-shaped crystal rod or tube of gas, emit a concentrated beam of light. Possible applications range from communications to medicine. Despite fast-moving advances, scientists have yet to develop systems powerful enough for large-scale cutting, welding proposed military applications. Autonetics scientists are using a chemical vapor process rather than a melting process to grow the magnesium oxide crystals. Ta's lowers processing temperatures from 3000 degrees to 1000 degrees centigrade, improving crystal quality by eliminating thermal strains. It also removes a barrier to large crystal growth — uniform high heat generation. In the second program, scientists for the first time are growing crystals of cerium dioxide. Rare earth ions will be introduced into the cerium dioxide, itself a near-rare earth metal, and their laser performance characteristics studied. Rare earth ions have excellent lasting characteristics, and scientists believe this combination will produce even more efficient laser action. The $14,000 program is being performed by the Research Center's crystal chemistry section. Dr. George R. Pullian is chief and Dr. Jack Mee is principal investigator. Legion Sets Gin Rummy Tounament A state-wide Gin Rummage Tournament is being sponsored by American Legion Post 142 Fullerton. The winner will be recognized as the California State Champion and will receive an expense-paid trip to Las Vegas to enter the 8th International Gin Rummage Tournament in March. Other prizes and trophies will be awarded to second and third place contenders. According to Ayers the Tournament will run three days before ginning Thursday, December 16, 6 p.m. to midnight; Friday, Dec. 13, 6 p.m. to midnight; and concluding Saturday, Dec. 14 by 5:30 p.m. A barbecue dinner will follow the tournament when prizes and trophies will be awarded to the winners. A donation of $10 is requested from contestants. Applications to enter the Tournament may be obtained by writing the Legion Hall, 1201 West Common wealth, Fullerton. Credit Unit Gets Award for Paper The Beckman Employees Credit Union, Fullerton, has earned an award for its news letter in statewide competition. Its "News Release" was judged best in layout and typography in its class — credit unions with assets in excess of $1 million. "A knowledge of law, a knowledge of the vehicle and a knowledge of one's own limitations are all important. But the most important factor is the moral strength to conscientiously tide that knowledge in a way which makes you a truly safe driver." The Moral Emphasis drive is under the leadership of the California Association of Insurance Agents. Cooperating organizations in addition to the Patrol are local safety councils, religious groups, and the California Traffic Safety Foundation. The commissioner pointed out that the campaign is "designed to reach a peak during the holiday season in an attempt to reduce the accident toll during that period when the traditional greeting 'Good Will Toward Men' often rings hollowly against the rising tide of deaths and injuries."
