MI Church First to Feature By LINDA DUDLEY Garden Grove Community Church, located at 12141 Lewis St. on the Orange-Garden Grove city line, is the world's first sanctuary with a "drive-in window." In a 10-acre garden setting stands a magnificent church designed to minister to all people whether in their cars or in the chapel pews. The phenomenal growth of the church is measured by the fact that construction began in September, 1959 and the church was dedicated Nov. 5, 1961 — just six years and eight months after the Rev. Robert Schuller conducted the first service of worship from the tar-paper roof of the snack bar of the Orange Drive-in Theater. Today the church ministers to nearly 3,000 people each week. The buildings and grounds are apraised at one million dollars. According to Rev. Schuller the church is affiliated with the oldest protestant denomination with a continuous ministry in the United States, the Reformed Church in America. The first American church was established in the hayloft of an old Dutch mill in 1628 on the tip of Manhattan Island and continues today as the Marble Collegiate Church on Fifth Avenue, the leadership of Dr. Vincent Peale. The city church includes over 40 denom backgrounds. "We are a united church. The community church includes members from over 40 denominational backgrounds. "We are a united protestant church. That is our intent and spirit," the Reverend added. The church was conceived under the concept of a chapel in a garden and fountain setting that would shut the world out and peace in. Architect for the award-winning church was Richard Neutra, who is listed along with Frank Lloyd Wright as one of the fathers of modern architecture. The internationally esteemed architect was given a free hand in the total design of the church. Currently on Neutra's drawing board are plans for the proposed 17-story Tower of Hope to be located west of the Sancuary. This tower, which will cost around one million dollars, will house a two-story, glass-enclosed "chapel in the sky," a 24-hour prayer room to be known as the "Upper Room of Orange County," and a 14 story psychological clinic which will have a staff og Christian ministers who will specialize in helping people with psychological problems. The clinic will be furnished as a church service free of charge. Industrialist Daily Carries on With 'Y' Robert A. Daily, resident manager of Delco-Remy Division General Motors Corporation, was elected to the Advisory Board of the Anaheim YMCA at the board's recent meeting. A nativie of Indiana, Daily became interested in YMCA work as a youth, and started his work as a summer counsellor in Marion, Ind. He also spent a summer as physical director for the Y program there. We need more buildings and an expanded program for Anaheim, and we are hoping that when our plans are formulated we can start a building fund for this purpose."
