California Federal At Billion Figure
Howard Edgerton, president of California Federal Savings, said in his mid-year financial statement today for the largest federal savings and loan association in the nation that total assets are now in excess of $1 billion dollars, the first federally chartered savings association in the nation to exceed that mark.
As of June 30 assets had advanced to $1,014,782,740, an increase of $213,000,849, or approximately 26.6 percent, since June 30 a year ago when assets stood at $801,781,891.

ICBM Contract To Aeronutronic Devices to be used by U.S. tercontinental ballistic missile (ICBMs) as an aid for penetration enemy target defenses will be developed under a contract to awarded the Aeronutronic Division of Philco Corporation, a subsidiary of Ford Motor Company by the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA), Department of Defense.
The announcement was made here today by John B. Lawson, Aeronutronic Division general manager and vice president of Philco, the wholly owned F subsidiary.
Lawson said that the program is assigned to Re - Entry Systems Programs, Charles G. Gaider director. Ferril A. Losee, who ports to Gant as program manager of Electronic Countermeasures Systems, will hold immediate project responsibility.
On the basis of the proposal accepted by ARPA, the program may eventually amount to an expenditure of six to seven million dollars. Lawson said.
Philco's Aeronutronic Division has been working since mid-1940 on development of decoys and re-entry systems in support of the nation's ICBM program, under contract to both ARPA and the U.S. Air Force.

David Bell Wins Grant for Study
GALESBURG, Ill. — David E. Bell, 219 Broadview, Anaheim, California, is one of 51 high school teachers from 22 different states chosen as participants in the summer mathematics institute from July 1 to August 9, college officials announced today.
Bell will receive a stipend for study during the six weeks course. He is a teacher in Fullerton High School, Fullerton, California.
The Knox institute is sponsored by a $49,800 grant from the National Science Foundation of Wington, D. C. Dr. Rothwell Stephens, chairman of the Knox mathematics department, is serving as director of the undertaking.
Eight at OC Get Degrees
Eight faculty members at Orange State College have recently received their doctorates, according to OSC Dean of Instruction Bernard L. Hyink.
Dr. Rudolfo Ahumada, OSC assistant professor of English, received his Ph.D. from the University of Southern California.
From the University of California at Berkeley, doctorates of philosophy were awarded to Dr. Levern F. Graves, presently an assistant professor of economics, and Dr. Kateeb M. Hussain, associate professor in the business administration division.
Dr. Cecilia R. Nelson, assistant professor of music education, received a doctorate in education form Columbia Teachers College, New York City, and Dr. Joseph B. Palisi, assistant professor of Sociology, received a Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska.
In the midwest, Dr. Jack A. Pontney received a Ph.D. from Northwestern University. He is presently an assistant professor of economics.
Dr. Edsel Ford Stiel, assistant professor of mathematics, received a Ph.D. from the University of California at Los Angeles and Dr. Hazel James Jones, associate professor of humanities, received a doctorate in education from the University of Southern California.
