"Call to Quarters" was sounded this week for all WAVES in Los Angeles and Orange Counties as the distaff volunteers of World War II prepared to mark the 21st Anniversary of their service in the United States Navy.
In observance of the event, a luncheon is being held Saturday, July 27, at the Ports O Call in San Pedro followed by a cruise of the harbor aboard the "S. S. Princess" for all WAVES and former WAVERS in this area.
"We are now 21, have come of age, and are going to celebrate our "legal status" in the Navy," announced LCDR Mary Waters, chairman for the event.
LCDR Waters, who is a "week-end warrior" at the U.S. Naval Air Station at Los Alamitos, recalled that it was on July 30, 1942, that Presidential orders activated by a special Act of Congress, directed that Women Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Service be placed on active duty with the nation's armed Naval forces.
More than 125,000 women responded to that call and many of them are now living in Los Angeles and Orange Counties," LCDR Waters said.

Pioneer Family Enjoying Steady Business Success
The Gazette this week nominates for Downtown "Merchant of the Week" the family trio that successfully operates the Wisser Sporting Goods store in Anaheim.
The three are Edwin and Allan Wisser and their sister, Mrs. Howard Harvey.
The sporting goods store was taken over by the three when their father retired from the business in 1958. The father, Lucien "Pete" Wisser, born in Anaheim in 1889, is one of the city's pioneers. Failing eyesight has been the cause of his retirement from the active community scene.
"Pete" Wisser's father opened the first of the family businesses in the Colony city. He operated the "Favorite Bar" in the city, located where the present sporting goods firm is now located. This business was conducted by the family until the advent of Prohibition.
In those days, the Wisser's recall, Center street was a dirt thoroughfare and horses were the mainstay for business firm delivery.
In World War I
"Pete," after World War I, returned from overseas Army duty to again get into the thick of Anaheim business. He bought the Houts Sporting Goods store which had opened on the site of the former Wisser business, and the Wisser Sporting Goods firm came into being. This was done in 1920 and the firm has been active on the Downtown scene and community affairs every since.
The father has been an active civic worker and served the city as a member of the City Council for two terms, from 1950 to 1958. Outdoor sporting activities held city educational system. They attended Citron street elementary, Fremont Junior High, Anaheim High and Fullerton Junior College.
Both Edwin and Allan saw World War II service as members of the U.S. Navy.
All Sports Supported
The store catered to critically every known sport with emphasis on fishing and hunting. However, bicycles, baseball, and badminton for example are just as readily available.
"Business has always been good for us," Mrs. Harvey declared. "We do have a long standing reputation in the city for service and we try to live up to it all the time."
The two brothers agree with her on the emphasis placed on personal attention.
"We all try to give our best efforts to each individual," Ed asserts, "and perhaps this is why each customer has confidence in our desire to satisfy."
Demonstrate attitude
A concrete demonstration of the willingness to help the customers was curiously enacted within moments after the above discussions. A customer locked his keys in the car.
There was just enough room where the windows were not completely closed to slip a rod through but the Wissers had to first fashion a hook for the end of the rod, then develop a rod long enough to reach across the inner width of the car, then stand by while the car owner managed to drop the contraption inside the car without successfully opening the door.
Ed Wisser went "back to the drawing boards" with only a
