Anaheim Sailor Wins Dolphins USS CAPITAINE — Ralph J. Cordonnier, seaman, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred S. Cordonnier of 905 North Magnolia Ave., Anaheim, recently received "Dolphins" emblem of a qualified submarine, while serving aboard the auxiliary submarine USS Capitaine, operating out of Subic Bay, Philippines. The "Dolphins" derives its name from the two dolphins and the surfaced submarine that compose the emblem. They are awarded after an extensive study of submarine mechanics and operation which requires a comprehensive on-the-job training program of up to seven months. All men serving on submarines must be "Qualified in Submarines" to ensure that every situation no matter how grave, will be skillfully and competently handled by the first available man. Before entering the service in November 1967, Cordonnier attended Western Senior High School. The plaza, built with student labor and donated to the school by this year's Senior Class, is a special area reserved for seniors only. Since most schools boast only the old-fashioned "circle", Magolia's plaza is considered distinct. Actually, it is a mall, with three separate meeting areas inside. Planters will surround it when completed. Work started on the plaza last spring when a large section of kickup in the schools central share was removed by the Seniors. Most of the labor and materials involved were either donated or bought at a discount. Cost of the plaza has been estimated at $1500, of which the class '83 has raised almost half. The Anaheim Union High School District will pay the balance.
