Orange Unit Joins OCCRA
The fifteenth county unit of the California Republican Assembly was admitted to membership by the Orange County Coordinating Republican Assembly at their monthly meeting recently held at the Public Finance building in Anaheim, The Orange unit, sponsored and aided in formation by the Tustin group, became the latest of the growing number of chapters in the Republican organization.
At the same meeting, representatives of all the units agreed unanimously to support the actions of La Habra and other chapters which individually had passed resolutions condemning the "so-called non-partisan political activities" of the League of Women Voters.
The resolution took a slap at CRA State President William Nelligan for his "taking upon himself to apologize to the League of Women Voters"; for what he termed "the intemperate action" of the La Habra unit.
The document enumerated the various instances in which the League opposed the "purpose and principles of the Republican Party." These included their professed opposition to "loyalty-security programs for college professors, teachers and educators in general," and to the Liberty Amendment which would put a constitutional limitation on taxation and which is "sponsored by Republican Congressman James Utt, Republican Assemblyman Robert Badham and supported by the Republican Central Committee of Orange County."
Also included in the enumeration was the League's support of "increased Legislative control of state spending and removal from the Constitution of all earmarking of revenues and fixed expenses."
In support of the CRA position that the League of Women Voters is not "educational" as they profess and is "political" as the CRA claims, the resolution referred to U. S. Court of Claims Docket No. 232-50 in which the League was denied tax exemption as an educational corporation.
At the same time, the CRA issued a challenge to the Orange County League of Women Voters to participate in a debate on the Liberty Amendment "in the interest of public information and education."
