AN EDITORIAL Division in Laos Permitted Typical Communist Action The dangerous situation in Laos was to be expected. The mess there is the logical outcome to the creation of a three-headed monster wherein the tiny Southeast Asian kingdom was split into three groups headed by pro-Communist, pro-Western and neutral forces. Any time the Reds are permitted to participate in such a division of a country, or if Communists gain important cabinet positions in a coalition government, the ball game is all over. It is only a matter of time. The Reds are consistent. They never really retreat and they do not give up. They may back up temporarily, or switch to another tactic, but they do not give up on goals. Their goal in Southeast Asia is to take over through various means Laos, Burma, Thailand, Cambodia, South Vietnam, Malaya and Formosa. Once this is achieved, the next wave of conquests would carry them to Indonesia, South Korea, New Zealand, India, Japan and the Philippines. Today the Communists In Southeast Asia, regarded by Peiping as a prime area for their efforts and concern, are utilizing subversion, infiltration, sabotage, propaganda, psychological warfare and the threat of military-economic-diplomatic pressures. In the end if these techniques do not succeed, military aggression in varying degrees can be utilized. Russia is vitally concerned and extremely active in Southeast Asia too. and Cuba. They do not want law and order and progress and peace in Lao Quite the contrary. Laos gives the Kremlin a made-to-order situation which can be played on at will by the Soviets. They know that Laos is thou sands of miles away from the United States and at the end of our supply lines. They realize further, that we are committed and stretched out in Korea and South Vietnam and to a lesser degree in Thailand. Further that we have a somewhat uncertain and vacillating policy in Southeast Asia as in many other areas. When Laos goes Thailand will be directly and immediately endangere and the same applies in a slightly lesser degree to Cambodia, Burma, and South Vietnam. These countries are the route the Reds want to travel after they drive toward Malaya and eventually Indonesia. The latter country probably can be taken over without too much trouble in view of the heavy Communist efforts there, a large Party and commitments made by Indonesia to Moscow and Peiping. If Moscow and Peiping wanted to stop the fighting in Laos and restore peace and progress to that country they could overnight. But they do not. They have a situation in Laos which they will exploit fully. Every country behind the iron and bamboo curtains which fell through infiltration or subversion did so by Communists taking over key positions in the government. The Reds went afarer the minister of defense, minister of Today the Communists in Southeast Asia, regarded by Pelping as a prime area for their efforts and concern, are utilizing subversion, infiltration, sabotage, propaganda, psychological warfare and the threat of military-economic-diplomatic pressures. In the end if these techniques do not succeed, military aggression in varying degrees can be utilized. Russia is vitally concerned and extremely active in Southeast Asia too. The seven nations earmarked by Pelping for conquest during the next few years have about 500,000 square miles of territory. They are rich in food production, especially rice, and they have many natural resources such as tin, rubber, oil, minerals, fishing, and forest products. Their population number some 170 millions. Red China has about 3½ million square miles and something like 700 to 800 million people. The Reds are poor in raw materials, have an extremely low living standard, and are faced with food shortages or famine much of the time. Therefore Burma, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, South Vietnam, Maylaya and Formosa are rich and tempting prizes. Moscow and Pelping are utilizing Laos as they have Berlin, South Korea If Moscow and Pelping wanted to stop the fighting in Laos and restore peace and progress to that country they could overnight. But they do not. They have a situation in Laos which they will exploit fully. Every country behind the iron and bamboo curtains which fell through infiltration or subversion did so by Communists taking over key positions in the government. The Reds went after the minister of defense, minister of the interior and minister of press and propaganda. This gave them control of all military forces, the secret police jails and concentration camps and mediums of thought and expression. The various Red ministers of press and propaganda took over newspapers, radio stations and then moved over into schools, theaters and churches. But always the Communists worked to win the defense ministership which gave them the shooting control and real power of the country. The troika, or Russian three-headed monster concept, is only another expression of this basic Communist tactic. It is classic with the Reds. Laos they have achieved another troika setup.
