Sheriff Warns Now is the Time—
Slam the Lid on Christmas Crime
"Slam The Lid on Christmas Crime" — with this slogan Sheriff James A. Musick's 304 man department that will continue through the Christmas holidays.
Aimed primarily at Christmas shoppers that leave packages in their automobiles while they continue shopping, the Sheriff also stressed he hoped the campaign would focus attention on all criminal activity. "Past experience has shown that most types of crime will increase to their highest level of the year in the next two months," he said.
Opening with this news story, the campaign will be carried to Orange County shopers through the cooperation of Orange County newspapers, radio stations, and retail businessmen who are donating time and space. "Ultimate success of this campaign to lower our crime rate will depend on co-operation from all citizens of Orange County," Sheriff Musick stated.
Posters and handbills, that show an automobile trunk filled with presents, will carry the message: "Don't invite unhappiness to your house for Christmas. Take an extra 2 seconds to lock your bundles safely out of sight in your car trunk. Thirty seconds can save your Christmas."
Experienced car burglars can break into the passenger compartment of a parked automobile and empty it in a matter of minutes." Undersheriff Robert H. Sharp told reporters. However, drivers of station wagons and pickup trucks can help safeguard their bundles by putting them out of sight on the floor of the vehicle, and locking all doors and windows if they just leave the car unattended.
"Presents left in closets, hidden in the garage or other parts of the house, and those placed under Christmas trees are also especially tempting to burglars," Sheriff Musick said. Other simple cautions he suggested were list: the serial numbers of items such as typewriters and cameras and the contents of Christmas packages as they are wrapped. This will help to protect you, low the simple rules given, call your Sheriff's Department local Police if you see anything suspicious or know of any crime Sheriff Mucik concluded.
Prepared by members of the Technical Services Reserve, the campaign resulted from a suggestion made by several members of the Sheriff's Patrol Division. Year members of the department witnessed the sorrow and unhappiness caused by the presents that averaged a total of $33.15 from each automobile burglarized. They hope to mainly reduce such thefts by the year's campaign. According to Undersheriff Sharp, posters and handbills will be distributed throughout the area patrolled by the Sheriff's Department, which will be available to all County law enforcement agencies or business establishments that require them.

Orange State College
Will Enroll Freshmen
For Very First Time
Approximately 300 freshmen will be enrolling at Orange State College next year for the first time for both students and College, it was announced by President William B. Langsdorf this week.
The Coordinating Council for Higher Education, in its meeting last Wednesday, in San Francisco concurred with the California State College Board of Trustees' action in approving OSC's request to admit freshmen in 1963.
Special Feature
A special feature of the planned freshmen enrollment for 1963 is the recommendation of the coordinating Council that Orange State admit only the top 33 per cent of the graduating seniors into its lower division class. This will make OSC unique among the other California state colleges, who are now admitting the top 39 per cent of the graduating high school students.
Orange State College, founded in 1959, has been operating as a two-year upper division college only because of limited physical facilities. Under the new Master Plan for Higher Education, which went into effect July 1, 1962, all new state colleges must receive approval of the Coordinating Council before instituting freshman and sophomore programs.
Freshman Class
With the completion of the new $11 million 6-story Science and Classroom Building on the Orange State College campus next Fall, OSC will then be able to accommodate a freshman class. With faculty and administrative approval, along with the official approval of the Board of Trustees.
of the California State Colleges, the local College will now become in fact as well as in plan a full-fledged four year institution of higher education.
"The addition of freshmen to our educational program at Orange State College will enable us to join forces with the very fine junior colleges in this area in serving the higher educational aspirations of the youth of Orange County," Dr. Langsdorf states.
Expands Role
"With the tremendous growth of this region, and the universal search for education exemplified by our people young and old, every opportunity must be offered to the community for the realization of these educational needs. Orange State College is happy to be able to now expand its role in higher education in Orange County," the President adds.

Anaheim Teen Club to Hold Christmas Dance Saturday
The Anaheim Teen Club, 2100 strong, will celebrate the Yule-tide season with their annual Christmas dance, Saturday evening at Savanna High School Gym, from 7:30 to 11:30.
Ed Alfaro, director of the Teen Club which is sponsored by the Anaheim Park and Recreation Department, promises that this year's dance will be "the best yet."
Four noted recording artists have been signed to provide the entertainment. They are "The Marketts", the "Routers". Marry Clayton and Lanny Duncan.
"The Mar-ketts, who play on the beach at Balboa". Alfaro said. They were signed overnight by Liberty Record Company and were the ones directly responsible for the 'Surfer's Stomp'. They have another hit going for them, "Balboa Blues" and currently a new release of theirs will be hitting the market. However nothing can be said of the record since, supposedly, it will create a new dance".
Alfaro said that the Warner Bros. artists, "The Routers" presently have "Let's Go", which is going to the top of the teen-age hit parade. Another hit is "Let's Go, Pony".
Commenting on the other entertainers, Marry Clayton and Lanny Duncan, Alfaro said that they recently signed a contract with the Tell Disc and Silver Streak record companies.
The Teen Club began only three years ago, and, according to Alfaro, "this dance could be the largest ever of its kind in Anaheim since the three teen clubs (7th, 8th and 9th) will be together for the first time. The dance will be a "dressy-dress affair".
