It'll Get Done
In-Yawn-Time
By DORIS LEE
If there's one thing I've taught my children well, it's procrastination.
This fact was well illustrated Sunday night when two of them had to burn the midnight oil to finish projects that were due Monday morning. Linda had to write a term paper, and Chuck was involved in his usual Sunday night bout with mechanical drawing.
And I was right there with them writing my column because, after all, I practice what I preach.
Procrastination is a delicate art requiring some innate ability plus a good deal of expert guidance.
"Now, watch me," I used to say to the children, "and I will show you how to put off till tomorrow what you can do today."
And today my lessons are bringing in dividends. Now I have company during my midnight sessions with the typewriter. We take coffee breaks together, chat and check on each other to make sure we stay awake. It's not so lonely.
This week's scene was typical. "You people kill me," Charlie commented Sunday morning as we lingered over coffee and comics. "You've got all this work to do; you've put it off all week and reason for putting off the drawing?"
"Yeah, he's a real pro," Charlie remarked dryly. He turned to Linda. "I suppose you have a good reason for reading Peanuts?"
"Oh, sure. I clear my brain with a little light reading before burdening it with the heavy stuff."
"What about you?" Charlie asked me. "You haven't started your column yet, I notice."
"Naturally not," I said. "I have a million things to do first — the beds, dishes, some hand washing, and dinner. I can't write with all that on my mind. And besides, you're forgetting an important thing."
"What's that?"
Model Mother
"I taught these kids all they know about procrastination. I've been their shining example, someone to look up to and pattern themselves after. Do you think I can let them down now by turning eager beaver?"
"Well—"
"No! I certainly cannot. When they sit down to their jobs tonight after everybody else is in bed, I'll be right there yawning and drinking coffee with them."
"Yay, team!" Linda and Chuck cried in unison.
He stared at them thoughtfully.

Car Comes First
"I've got to wash the car first," Chuck said.
"Why does the car have to be clean before you sit down to draw?" Charlie wanted to know.
"Because I have to run down to the drug store for some India ink and I sure can't go in a dirty ear," he answered.
"Spoken like a true procrastinator," I said, beaming. "Notice how there is a good, sound

He stared at them thoughtfully. "They seem happy enough," he said.
"Of course they're happy," I said. "Why shouldn't they be? Look at it this way. Procrastination is a natural instinct. Usually it's outlawed in families. But it goes on anyway. So, I've simply legalized it. It makes for happier, better adjusted children."
And that's how it went. We washed cars and dishes, and read the comics, and made beds. We even watched "The Wizard of Oz" on television. By ten o'clock we were ready to begin. About half-way through the first pot of coffee Charlie came in, paper and pencil in hand.
"I have this report I have to write," he said. "I forgot about it. It's due tomorrow."
I pulled out a chair and motioned him to sit down.
"Cup of coffee?" I asked.

Fred Hartung showed us on Monday the diploma awarded to him for the best white wine exhibited at the agricultural fair. It is a handsome souvenir and well worth framing. The other Anaheim exhibitors who are entitled to diplomas are: Miss Agusta Hartung, Wm. Koenig, Chas. Wille and N. Gray.
At the conclusion of services at the Presbyterian church on last Sunday evening. A. Guy Smith discovered that his horse and buggy were standing at a different place from where he had placed them before entering the church, and that an afghan, which had been left in the buggy, had disappeared. It is probably some miscreants had taken a ride in the buggy, and that during the surreptitious ride the afghan was lost. Such pranks are very funny as long as the perpetrators elude detection.
At the solicitation of many businessmen in Santa Ana, Messrs. Scott and Montgomery of this place have opened a branch law office in our neighboring village. Mr. Montgomery can be found at the Santa Ana office on Tuesday and Friday of each week. All legal business entrusted to this firm will receive the most prompt and careful attention.
Jos. Bennehscheidt yesterday called our attention to a new lot of "Medellin" range which he all kinds of fancy cakes, also honey cakes and a great variety of fancy cookies and Cristmas tree decorations from one cent up. A fine assortment of candies from the cheapest Christmas mixed to the very fine French creams and chocolate candies. Also imported Swiss chocolate by the pound in 5 and 10-cent packages.
Harry Davis was over from Santa Ana a few days ago. Harry is in the hardware business in the county seat and says prosperity is coming his way.
Max Nebelung will move his real estate and insurance office from his present location adjoin-ing Center Market to the office lately vacated by Dr. Tyler.
Justus Schneider was in this week from Orangethorpe. Mr. Schneider is one of the prosperous Horticultists of his section, owning one of the fine apricot orchards on the avenue.
A social hop will be given at the Opera House on the evening of January 2. The committee in charge is composed of the following ladies: Miss Amparo Arballo, Miss Esther Daniel, Miss Belen Gaxiola and Miss Essie Ruiz.

Jos. Bennechesidet yesterday called our attention to a new lot of "Medallion" ranges which he has just received. The ranges are finely finished and have every imaginable convenience attached to them. They are changed and perfected each year and those for 1879 contain many improvements.
Mr. Warling, our harness maker, has recently turned out some very fine work. If anyone desires a set of harness, or a saddle made in any particular style, he can be accommodated by giving his order to Mr. Warling.
A fisherman from Anaheim Landing was in town on Tuesday selling fine fresh mackerel. This species of fish has only lately made its appearance on this part of the coast, and it is to be hoped that they will like our aqueous climate well enough to remain, as they are exceedingly toothsome and delicate in flavor.
The tin roof on the Planters hotel has been repaired and the rain which has considerably deferred its appearance until repairs were completed can now come down at its earliest convenience.
Messrs. P. H. Look and Co. will on Monday kill the royal bees heretofore spoken of in these columns, and on Thursday their market will be decked in all the glory of Christmas decorations. The public is invited to call during the day and select a Christmas roast.

Secretary Snow of the Orange County Chamber of Commerce is preparing to construct a gizzle bear of walnut shells. He has already procured the frame for Bruin, and as soon as his assistant completes the task of opening several thousand walnuts and removing the meat, the shells will be applied to the frame and the bear placed on display at Exhibit hall on North Main street.

The Junior College problem is still being discussed without any definite plan being reached. Anaheim Proponents, led by the high school board and the chamber of commerce, favor one school for the entire county, but if this is found to be impossible, two schools, one in the north and one in the south, would be acceptable. It is argued that in a small county like Orange county, with a population of only 120,000, that one Junior College will answer all purposes for a number of years.
Fullerton may secure a large aircraft manufacturing plant. It was announced by the industrial committee of the Fullerton Chamber of Commerce, which met with officials of the concern recently.
