Temple Sets Anne Williams Holy Days
Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish religious New Year, will be observed this year beginning at sundown on Friday, Sept. 28 at Temple Beth Sholom marking the start of a ten-day period traditionally considered a time of spiritual self-evaluation for Jews throughout the world. Rosh Hashanah ushers in the most sacred time of the Jewish religious calendar. The Holy Days reach their climax on Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, which begins this year on Sunday evening, Oct. 7, at sundown.
Worship services will be conducted by Rabbi Morton C. Fierman and Cantor Harvey Goldstein at Temple Beth Sholom of Orange County, 13031 Tustin Ave., Santa Ana.
Ceremonies on Rosh Hashanah (which literally means "head of the year") will inaugurate the year 5723, recokoned according to the Lunar calendar of Jewish tradition.
Registration for the Religious and Hebrew Schools at Temple Beth Sholom will take place from 9 to 12 a.m., Sept. 12 through 21, it was announced by Cantor Harvey Goldstein.
All parents must register their children prior to the opening of either school, Cantor Goldstein stated. Hebrew School begins Sept. 17, while the Saturday and

Xi Eta Eta Chapter Lists New Projects
The first meeting of the fall session of Xi Eta Eta Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi, was held Tuesday at the home of the Chapter president, Mrs. Robert R. Smith, 10852 MacMurray. The program and projects for the coming year were reviewed.
The following members have been appointed as chairman of special committees: Mrs. Don Henry, program; Mrs. Bob Lowe, social; Mrs. John Lauzon, ways & means; Mrs. Richard Howard, service; Miss Anne Golding, publicity; Mrs. Don Nelson, courtesy and Mrs. Jack Rea as historian. The program for the meeting was given by Mrs. Don Henry.
Nineteen members and guests plan to attend the forthcoming Southern California Council Breakfast Sept. 16 at the Lafayette Hotel in Long Beach.

Church Slates Liturgy Rites
Elevation of the Cross will be observed by St. Luke's Orthodox Church in Santa Ana Friday, Sept. 14, and Sunday, Sept. 16, at the 10:30 a.m. Litury.
During the Liturgy the priest places the Cross on a tray of flowers and sweet basil and carries the tray to the center of the church where it is venerated by the people. The event commemorates the return of the Cross to Jerusalem after Persians had stolen it in 614.
Begonia Society To Meet Tomorrow
The Orange County Branch of the American Begonia Society will meet at 8 p.m. tomorrow at the Grange Hall, Century Taft St. in Garden Grove. Guests will be Miss Rogene mins and Robert Allen, wife of the horticulture scholar awarded this year by the Or County Branch.
Guest speaker will be Mrs. Wright, presenting the question and answer forum of a pre-propagating class and asking about begonias in general. Begonia plant table will be retured, followed by refreshments.

Wolfe, 2624 West California, Santa Ana, an aerologist at Marine Corps Air Station, El Toro, displays the statuette presented him by members of Brownie Troop 234 of Anaheim. Williams Sets Wedding
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Griffith Williams, 405 W. Sycamore, are announcing the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their daughter Anne Griffith to Don L. Bryan, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl D. Bryan of Littleton, Cole.
The bride-elect is the grand-daughter of Mrs. Myrtle Roquet and the late Octave Roquet, pioneer merchants in Anaheim. Her father, the former owner of Bob Williams' Sporting Goods, is now with Roquet Realty. The mother of the bride-elect is vice principal and dean of girls at Trident Junior High in Anaheim.
Miss Williams was graduated from Anaheim Union High School in 1956 and from Whittier College in 1960. While at Whittier she held an office in the Associated Women Students. She is presently teaching a sixth grade class at Golden Hill Elementary School in Fullerton.
Bryan attended the University of Colorado and played football for the Armed Services' teams. He was graduated from Chapman College in Orange. He is presently a member of the coaching staff of Orange High School.
The couple is planning a wedding to be held in First Methodist Church of Anaheim on Nov. 23.
Two Named for Scholarships
Miss Rogene Cummins of Garden Grove and Robert Allen of Santa Ana, were the 1962-63 Horticultural Scholarship winners awarded by the Orange County Branch of the American Begonia Society. Miss Cummins will attend Orange Coast College and Allen will enter Cal Poly at Pomona.
The Orange County Branch offers this scholarship in Horticulture, Plant Pathology or related fields to a qualifying student for the purpose of stimulating interest in the important field of horticulture. This is the first year that two scholarships have been awarded.

Junior Ebells Hear New Singing Group at Meet
The Junior Ebell Club of Anaheim opened its meeting Tuesday with a devotional honoring the new president, Mrs James Sides. The musical theme Mrs. Sides has chosen for the coming year, "Side by Side," was sung by the Anaheim Junior E.“Bells”. This is a group recently formed by music chairman Mrs. Lawrence Peterson and includes; Mrs. Peterson, Mrs. James Imig, Mrs. Carl Herron, Mrs. William Willcockson, and Mrs. George Johnson.
Mrs. Jack Louis, social service chairman, announced that the first welfare meeting will be held Sept. 11 at 7:45 p.m. at the Ebell clubhouse.
Mrs. Robert Chapman, art chairman, announced a children's art exhibit to be held in the mall at the Broadway Shopping Center Sept. 20, 21, and 22, beginning at 9 a.m. and continuing all day. The pictures will be those done by the young students at the art classes held by Mrs. Chapman this summer.
A travelog entitled “Changing and Changeless Norway,” presented by Mrs. Hjordis Kittel Parker was the program for the evening. Mrs. Parker is a renowned expert on all the Scandi-navian countries and presented a very interesting and beautiful program.
Mrs. W. H. Currier, Ebel Club president and Mrs. H. B. Auarbach, Ebell Music Section chairman, presided at the tea table. The decorations were centered around the theme for the evening and featured a miniature record player playing “Side by Side.” Mrs. Charles Alvey was chairman.
Baptists Elect Two Ministers
Reverend Walter Vernon, minister of the First Congregational Church of Anaheim moved up to the presidency and Reverend Gerald Grotey, minister of the First Baptist Church, was elected vice-president of the Anaheim Ministerial Union at its September breakfast meeting at the Charterhouse Hotel.
Vernon had been vice president and succeeds Rev. David Deshler who recently moved from the city. Both new officers were welcomed to their posts by Rev. Al Casebeer of the First Christian Church who served as president during the past club year.
The ministers' group set Nov. 4 and 11 as Sundays for the churches to emphasize decent literature to their congregations. A program dealing with secondary school training was presented by Lowell Jones, Richard Glover, and Gale Blank of the Anaheim Union High School district.
The ministerial groups meet the first Wednesday of each month for a breakfast meeting. Programs of an educational nature are planned and the groups seek to assist in community betterment. Ministers of all denominations in the Anaheim area are invited to attend.
New Year's Service Seed

The New Year's Eve will be conducted by Rabbi field, Cantor Philip Modda the Beth Emet Choir on Sept. 28, at 8 p.m. Mornings will be held on Saturday Sunday, Sept. 29 and 30. The Atonement Services will Sunday, Oct. 7, at 7:30 p.m., all day Monday, Oct. 8, before at 9 a.m.
Dr. Irwin E. Lawton of Anaheim, vice-president in christian affairs, announced instead of reading the na-departed members, a Me Book listing their names is published, and will be distributed at the Yizkor Service. Those needing to include names in their request to send them to Temple. The lay leader of the congregation is Leslie Goldmine Fullerton, and Harry Krue Garden Grove is executive president.
Holland Girl Leaves for Home
Holland Girl Leaves for Home After Year on YMCA Staff
Miss Nannie Elzinga of Amsterdam, Holland, who has been related to the staff of the Anaheim YMCA for the past twelve months said goodbye to her many friends and left this week to return to her home, and to her former position on the staff of the YMCA in Amsterdam.
Accompanying her was Mrs. Roy Agren, YMCA program supervisor for Anaheim High School and Miss Marilyn Mackinson, also of Anaheim. Itinerary for the trip includes stopovers at the Grand Canyon, Washington D.C. and New York prior to embarking on the Holland American Line for the trans-Atlantic crossing.
While living in Anaheim, Nannie was the house guest of three prominent YMCA families, Mr. and Mrs. Cliff Haskell, Mr. and Mrs. Warren Hodges, and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Borden.
As a part of her training, Nannie was related to the club program at Anaheim High School, and Fremont and Trident Jr. High's. She worked in the YMCA office as part of the administrative staff, and served as a counselor at both resident Mountain Camp and Day Camp.
The year's program was made possible through funds raised by the local YMCA Youth under the Union High School district.

Tofield, spiritual leader of the congregation, announced that the High Holy Day services of the Temple this year will be held at the Retail Clerks Union Auditorium, Stanton and present, in Buena Park. "Girl of the year" was the honor bestowed on Mrs. Thomas Hoag by Eta Epsilon, Anaheim chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha Sorority, at a recent meeting in the home of Mrs. Marty Herling.
Mrs. Hoag will represent Eta Epsilon in February as their "Girl of the Year" candidate at the annual dinner-dance of the nine chapters of Epsilon Sigma Alpha in the Orangewood Regional District. In last year's competition, Miss Virginia Bliss, the Anaheim chapter's candidate for "Girl of the Year", placed as runner-up in the contest held at the Jolly Roger Inn.
Mrs. Hoag, who is chosen for this recognition mainly for her successful charity fund raising activities over the past year, has served as president of the chapter and held various other offices during a seven year membership. She is currently serving as corresponding secretary for the chapter. Her local contributions include service in various Red Cross and United Fund functions. She is employed at Hughes Aircraft in Fullerton and resides at 817 W. Sycamore in Anaheim.
The chapter is now making plans for the first activity of the new social season. This will be a "rushing" event, Sept. 19, beginning with cocktails at the home of Mrs. Ronald Costello, and in the form of a progressive dinner, climaxing at the residence of James Fry.
Included in the plans for Fall activities is a semi-formal dance Nov. 10 at the Anaheim Elks Club new ballroom with music provided by Warren Barker and his orchestra. The dance is planned as a charitable fund-raising activity, with proceeds donated to the Children's Hospital, the chapter's main philanthropic project.

"Selling — An Inspiration or Irritation" will be the topic of the speech to be delivered by Rev. Alec Gerald Nichols of the First Methodist Church of Long Beach when he addresses the Sales and Marketing Executives Club of Orange County Sept. 17 at the Disneyland Hotel.
