LADY IN DISTRESS — California Highway Patrol officer Rodney Betts proved the CHP does more than write tickets and fight freeway traffic yesterday when he stopped to help Jean Thill of Anaheim change a tire. She was more than a typical "damsel in distress." The troubled lady suffered a flat tire as she its run on the first day unidentified.

Comedian Heard White Cane Day
Television comedian Gale Gordon today was named national chairman of White Cane Days for 1952.
The two-day fund drive, now in its 12th consecutive year, is annually sponsored by Lions Clubs International, and will be observed in California, Nevada and most states of the nation this year on Oct. 5 and 6.
Gordon succeeds Art Linkletter's national chairman. He plays the role of Mr. Wilson in the weekly video series, "Dennis the Mence," and hs won acclaim as Mr. Conklin in the former Eve Arden series, "Our Miss Brooks," plus roles on the "Pete nd Gladys Show," "The Brothers," and others.

Water Struggle Ends As Senator Dedicates Project
It was the end of a long and bitter fight to help bring water to southern California when U. S. Senator Thomas H. Kuchel participated last week in groundbreaking ceremonies for the $400,-000,000 San Luis water project.
Senator Kuchel, ranking Republican member of the Interior and the development and was co-sponsor of a fourth San Luis Bill. In 1958 he pushed one version through the Senate, but it died in the House. The measure he introduced in 1959 was finally signed into law by President Eisenhower in 1960.
Army Pvt. Mike A. Gutierrez, son of Sixto Gutierrez, 228 E. Sycamore, Anaheim, participated with more than 70,000 Army and Air Force personnel in Exercise SWIFT STRIKE II a two-week U. S. Strike Command maneuver in North and South Carolina that ended Aug. 17.
Gutierrez is assigned to the 21st Chemical Company, regularly stationed at Fort McClellan, Ala. He entered the Army in November 1961 and completed basic training at Fort Ord, Calif.

Senator Dedicates Project
It was the end of a long and bitter fight to help bring water to southern California when U. S. Senator Thomas H. Kuchel participated last week in groundbreaking ceremonies for the $400,000,000 San Luis water project.
Senator Kuchel, ranking Republican member of the Interior and Insular Affairs Committee, led the battle for his vital link in California's Feather River project through four different Congresses.
In three Congresses he introduced legislation to provide for the development and was co-sponsor of a fourth San Luis Bill. In 1958 he pushed one version through the Senate, but it died in the House. The measure he introduced in 1959 was finally signed into law by President Eisenhower in 1960.
Blocks Move
Again this year when Senator Wayne Morse launched a last-minute attempt to nullify the San Luis contract, Kuchel was in the forefront of the battle which successfully blocked this move.
Army Pvt. Larry G. James, whose parents Mr. and Mrs. Robert A. Tuger, live at 810 S. Oakhaven Dr., Anaheim, Calif., recently completed the four-week airborne course at The Infantry School, Fort Benning, Ga. James received instruction in parachuting and the techniques of air-dropping troops and cargo. The 19-year-old soldier entered the Army last January and completed basic training at Fort Ord, Calif. James is a 1961 graduate of Western High School.
David M. Stanfield, seaman recruit, USNR, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles E. Stanfield of 922 Agate st., Anaheim, recently completed two weeks active duty training at the Naval Station, San Diego, Calif.
Navy Lieutenant junior grade Donald W. Seapy, son of Mr. and Mrs. John W. Seapy of 1253 Pearl St., Anaheim, has entered the mythical "Domain of Neptunus Rex," with 92 other members of Attack Squadron 52 aboard the attack aircraft carrier USS Lexington.

Appointment of a member of the original Nixon committee to serve on this year's Orange County Nixon for Governor Committee was announced this week by Walter Schmid, Garden Grove rancher and O. W. “Dick” Richard, Newport Beach merchant, co-chairmen of the committee.
They have named Richard J. Helwig, Newport Beach resident and representative for a paper manufacturer, to the Orange Coun
ginia, he resides at 1761 Miramar Drive in Balboa. A daughter, Mrs. Eric Lehmann resides in Arcadia.
In announcing the appointment,
Schmid and Richard said that "the continuing interest in Richard Nixon of those who know him best attests to the sincerity and integrity our candidate possessed in addition to his unquestioned ability."

Marine Lance Corporal Wentworth W. Scamman, ward of Robert W. Scamman, was promoted to the present rank July 30 while serving with the headquarters company of the El Toro Marine Corps Air Station at Santa Ana, Calif.
As home of the Third Marine Aircraft Wing, El Toro provides facilities services for first line jets, transports and helicopters of the Marine Corps' air-ground combat team.
Tony M. Vega, storekeeper third class, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Tony B. Vega of 906 South Philadelphia, Anaheim, arrived in Alameda, Calif., on August 20, aboard the attack aircraft carrier USS Hancock after spending nearly seven months in the Western Pacific.
The carrier operated as a unit of the Seventh Fleet while in the Far East.
The Hancock participated in operations sponsored by the South East Asia Treaty Organization (SEATO) while overseas. In addition, she visited Hong Kong and ports in Japan.

They have named Richard J. Helwig, Newport Beach resident and representative for a paper manufacturer, to the Orange County Group as chairmen of the Activities Subcommittee.
In this capacity, Helwig will coordinate the county-wide campaigning efforts to the volunteers who use telephone and door-to-door calling to round up votes for their candidate.

He will also supervise public rallies and coffee hours, special projects and election-day activities.
He was a member of the committee that worked in 1946 to elect Richard Nixon to Congress, and has paticipated in all of the Nixon campaigns since that time.
Helwig formerly was a member of the Los Angeles County Republican Central Committee, at one time served as executive secretary of the Los Angeles County Republican Assembly, and as vice-president of Los Angeles Republican Assembly, and as vice-president of Los Angeles County Young Republicans.
A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, he has resided in Southern California since 1924. With his wife, Virginia, he resides at 1761 Miramar Drive in Balboa. A daughter, Mrs. Eric Lehmann resides in Arcadia.

Fuchsia Group Sets Potluck Dinner-Meet
The Orange County Branch of the California National Fuchsia Society will hold a potluck dinner at 6:30 p.m., preceding the regular 8 p.m. meeting Tuesday, Sept. 18 at the George Washington School, Emily and Chartres Sts., Anaheim.
C. R. "Doc" Houghton of Long Beach, speaking on "Propagating Fuchsia Cuttings," will be the feature of the evening.
There will be a specimen plant table. Members are asked to bring a covered dish, salad or dessert and table service. The public is invited to attend. Admission is free.
