2—ANAHEIM GAZETTE ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA Wednesday, September 12, 1943 FOR YOUR INFORMATION By VIRGIL PINKLEY Editor and Publisher GROWING ANTI-AMERICAN FEELING WE FAIL PRESENT PROPERLY THE RECORD AID, PROPAGANDA SHORTCOMINGS STOP BEING APOLOGETIC TO RUSSIA Anti-American demonstrations in many parts of the world, and especially in Western Germany, stress anew the fact that we still tell our story badly. We are poor propagandists. Daily acts underline this fact. It continues to be true that generally we do a second-rate job of presenting the world's best story while the Russians do a tremendous job in presenting the world's worst story. In propaganda and psychological battles with the Soviets we frequently come off second best. This is most unfortunate in view of our policies, traditions and the record. Never has any nation been so generous to so many peoples for such a long period as the United States. Our aid and help, especially to former enemies such as Japan and Germany, are without parallel in modern history. Since the end of World War II we have provided foreign economic aid of more than $100 billion. Billions more have been supplied from American taxpayers in military assistance. There has been additional indirect aid, too. We have kept hundreds of thousands of American military overseas to keep the peace and prosecute. Secondly, the incident of an American flier in a U2 plane apparently straying in bad weather for a few minutes over a corner of Sakhalin Island north of Japan. It is a territory long part of Japan but now occupied through force of arms by Russia. We handled our reply to a threatening and profane Soviet note in a timid and unnecessarily apologetic manner. If any nation on earth, owe us real friendship, understanding and solid support it is West Germany. This applies even more so to the residents of West Berlin. We were kind and just in our short occupation of West Germany. We handed the nation and government back to the Germans in less than 10 years after the end EXHIBITION — Orange year at the California S through September 9 in the Metropolitan Water American troops. There many expression of anti-American feeling. Tension in Berlin is now lower than at any time since the war was built by the Communists. Anti-American bitterness West Berlin has spread to Germany. Such acts and actions weaken our position in negotiations with the Russian make it even more difficult. Since the end of World War II we have provided foreign economic aid of more than $100 billion. Billions more have been supplied from American taxpayers in military assistance. There has been additional indirect aid, too. We have kept hundreds of thousands of American military overseas to keep the peace and protect many nations. In Western Europe large areas of the Middle East and in the new nations of Africa and Orient we have handled the defense job. This has relieved or eliminated local responsibility and costs. We have assigned the powerful and costly Sixth and Seventh Fleets to the Mediterranean and the Far Pacific. Thousands of our planes have patrolled the skies above Great Britian, France and West Germany to mention only a few nations receiving such American help. Not Popular Yet with all this assistance we are not as popular as we deserve to be, nor will many of these countries respond adequately to our appeals for mutual defense and joint aid programs to under-developed nations. Between mid-1955 and the end of 1961, for example, the United States gave India in aid $2,726,000,000 while the Sino-Soviet block furnished $863,000,000. Mr. Nehru with his pious words and talk about peace and brotherly love has nicely played us off against Russia and China. During this same period we poured into Communist Jugoslavia $794,000,000 of American taxpayers money. In this same stretch Dictator Marshal Tito got $111,000,000 from Red China and Red Russia. So we paid out on roughly a eight-to-one ratio. Two Examples Currently there are two examples of our weakness or ineffectiveness in propaganda. First was the incident of the young East German being shot by East German police, troops and Russian stooges at the infamous Berlin wall. He was left badly wounded for more than an hour as he cried out and bled to death on the East German side of the wall and on East German soil. Through Our Efforts West German military forces have been largely trained and equipped by American tax dollars and military experts. We have helped make it possible for West Germany to achieve the highest living standard the country has ever known. Our support and leadership brought West Germany back into the family of nations and respectability. The same is largely true of Japan and Italy. Yet what happens when the Russian stooges in East Germany shoot an East German youth on East German soil before a slave wall built under orders and directions of Moscow? For days thousands of West Berliners rioted. They jeered profane Soviet note in a timid and unnecessarily apologetic manner. If any nation on earth owes us real friendship, understanding and solid support it is West Germany. This applies even more so to the residents of West Berlin. We were kind and just in our short occupation of West Germany. We handed the nation and government back to the Germans in less than 10 years after the end of the war and years before we rely need to. Magnificent Material Contrast our treatment of the Germans in the West with the brutal Russian occupation in the East. The Soviets stripped East Germany like a horde of locusts. Subsequently a rigid slave or police state has been imposed by the Reds. Here is magnificent material taken from the record for propaganda and psychological warfare, but we make only half-hearted use of the same. We should pound away hour after hour, day after day on the record — but we do not! For 17 years America and the Western Allies, but chiefly the United States, have protected, defended, championed, clothed and fed West Berlin and West Germany. The Anglo-American airlift saved West Berlin from starvation and submission. We helped rebuild West Germany and equip her factories and businesses with the latest machinery. We actually helped build in Germany formidable rivals and keen competitors for American industry, business and exports. Anti-American bitterness in East Berlin has spread to West Germany. Such acts and atmoster weaken our position in negotiations with the Russians and take it even more difficult to extend West Berlin at the grave risk of becoming involved in a nuclear war. Russia was still bleeding East-Europe while America was building Western Europe and East Germany. Russia felt she did not need to buy or try and win friendship there through help because she could rely on the army, party and the police. Why don't we make full use of these facts? Why don't we hammer out the record? Why don't we open and close early broadcasting day in Berlin Germany, or every hour on hour by, tolling on the number days it has been since the innocent Red wall was built in Berlery. Why not carry a running toll East Germans shot at the wall Russian stooges as they attempted to escape slavery and freedom in the West? Replying to the Moscow note training to the U2 flight, I think should have said that the pilot must have strayed over Sakhalin, then we should have added this was only a minor infrac-tat best. When we should toll off the num-ber of times Russian planes or ships have strayed over non-Russian water or territory, men used the fact that Russian trawered equipped with radar and a set of electronic apparatus roam our coasts and not too far from sensitive military areas as Canaveral; or that Russian cruise close to our nuclear areas in the Pacific; or Russian submarines have spotted in coastal waters of various nations; or that Russian ships and planes trail and spy on OO and other allied military vessels. Should mention that military ties of many nations stray over American soil, or areas we are acting at the request of the nation questioned, that Letters to the Editor 459 Gayleg Avenue Los Angeles 24, Clif. September, 1962 Dear Editor: As a summer employee at Autonetics (A Division of North American Aviation, Inc.), I have had an opportunity to view the company-union dispute more objectively and less emotionally than have the full time employees. I have found the dispute interesting and have therefore studied it at length. I wish to express a few conclusions I have formed about the UAW's demands and the stand taken by North American. The union asserts that the closed shop or "agency" shop—a phrase the union uses to mask the results it desires—is necessary and fair, for it requires everyone to pay their share for the benefits given them by the union. This is a calculated lie. The benefits gained by employees of North American are resultive of the historical advances made in employee-employer relations ships in our country. The benefits to laborers are a product of our increased productivity and better education of our citizens. Benefits today are given by the company; the union "protection" for which the union demands everyone pay a lie that would appeal only to gullible fools. The union cites closed shops in other companies and industries as just reasons for NAA having such a shop. However, repetition of this mockery of freedom does not make it less wrong. This is the United States and its citizens are proud of their freedom. This union shop is a blatent disregard for each and every employee's free will. It is a sad thing to see a union, an organization formed for the protection of worker's rights, ritory where they should not be. But we do not try to shoot them down, or threaten violent military action as Russia did in the Sakhalin note. Further, we should hammer on the theme that the incident occurred over Sakhalin, former Japanese territory now occupied by Russian militant forces. endangering those very rights and attempting to suppress freedom of choice. The union is attempting to collectivize labor as nations have attempted to collectivize their agriculture. The union greedily bleeds a faceless mass of workers, each paying its tribute to the bosses who grow fat on the members' hard-earned dues — $1,122,000 a year from Autonetics alone. Now the union demands more—an additional $660,000 per year taken from the ten thousand Autonetics employees that would be forced to pay tribute if a union shop is formed. What do the members get for their money? They get a union that won't let them escape from its hungry jaws once they have joined. They get pay raises that they would have received any way. What percent of the union membership controls the union's actions, and how many Autonetics union members know where their dues are spent, more than one million dollars a year? No, I don't think the aerospace workers need what the union is trying to shove down their throats. I don't believe this phony fire alarm that the union is sounding. There is no fire. There are no unfair practices on the part of the company. The only danger is that the union may succeed in forcing its closed shop on the aerospace workers, thus wrestling their freedom and rights out of their grasp. If the union succeeds, justice will go unserved and our nation's pride will receive one more red scar across its uplifted face. Alan W. Hitchens Autonetics, La Palma and U.C.L.A. Titled, "Clearing the Paper" Aspiring Candidates Start Down Campaign Trail Soon By JOHN A. MURDY, JR. 35th Senatorial Dist. The campaign trail begins in a few days. We're talking about the hot political campaign for the November 6th general election. And this one may go down in history as one of the most heated, controversial and narrowest of margins for victory. Certainly, the gubernatorial as well as other partisan races this year will make headlines galore. Senate Reapportionment, the Francis Amendment, and 23 other propositions on the ballot are bound to stir up controversy. They have already. Current opinion polls show the popularity of top candidates in each party to be quite good and the margin of votes quite close. One of the reasons for this, we think, is that both major political parties have succeeded in lining up top candidates. The result is that there are few issues on which one candidate can point a finger at the other and sing: "I Can Do Anything Better Than You." Interest Increased interest on the part of the general population (often accused of being apathetic) has put politics on a more realistic basis. Candidates must do their best or lose at best. Every citizen should make it his or her responsibility to be informed on all issues and candidates. Yes, I know it takes time, but that's what has been wrong with us for so many years. We've always been too busy to worry about politics. Now all of a sudden everyone's concerned bout the drift to the left and drift to the right. If we devoted more time to politics, we might have a more responsible government and more qualified candidates in office. It goes without saying that good candidates must take a stand on key issues of the day. And you will find out just how good a candidate is if you press him for his views on why he takes that stand. If he or she doesn't, then you know they're operating by instinct in... Crittenden warned "With the opening of school, thousands of young pedestrians and bicycle riders once again will appear on streets and at crossings which you may be used to seeing empty."
