Orange State Will Add Engineering Courses
In a program of constantly expanding educational opportunities, Orange State College will officially add the word "Engineering" to the name of the College's Science and Mathematics division this Fall, President William B. Langsdorf revealed this week.
In accordance with a request of the faculty of the division, and in order to prepare appropriately for the addition of engineering courses at OSC, President Langsdorf is authorizing a change in the name of the division to the Division of Science, Mathematics, and Engineering, this month.
"Orange State College is uniquely situated in the mist of one of the nation's largest space and missile complexes to offer a top-quality program in engineering, particularly the field of electrical engineering," Dr. Langsdorf declares.
Intent
It has been presumed since the founding of Orange State College in 1959 that the new college would ultimately establish a strong engineering curriculum, the OSC chief executive points out. To this end, two recent developments have hastened the founding of an educational program in engineering.
During the 1961-1962 academic year appointment of an engineering advisory committee completed by Langsdorf, and recent study of the entire California State Colleges instructed an program indicated the aptitude of an engineering riculum at Orange State College.
Master curricula study, made by Chancellor Glenn S. Dunn, office at the request of the teachers of the California State Colleges, made specific suggestions concerning the special emphasis of the individual state colleges' curricula, and it particularly commended a full program in electrical engineering at Orange State.
This engineering course of duty will be developed by the college and presented to thetees for their approval during coming year, according to the ange State College president.
Officers
Chairman of the newly-named Division of Science, Mathematical and Engineering will continue be Dr. Miles D. McCarthy, fessor of biology and chairman the biological science department.

Senator Kuchel Sponsors Shoreline Erosion Bill
U.S. Senator Thomas H. Kuchel of California this week urged the Senate Public Works Committee to include in a proposed omnibus bill a project to correct and prevent beach erosion in the Surfside Seal Beach section of the Orange County shoreline.
Following his appearance before the Committee, the senior California senator said he advocated prompt action to authorize the $4,250,000 undertaking after being told the Army Engineers could make minor modifications in technical plans if found advisable. This would overcome fears about possible adverse effect of the work on neighboring Newport Beach. Recently Newport Beach asked for further study before any work is authorized.
Project, which Kuchel endorsed and previously sought to have authorized by a separate bill, involves placing 7,000,000 cubic yards of sand on the already-damaged beach, building an offshore breakwater to trap silt and leak the force of storms, and periodic renourishment of the Anaheim Bay shoreline.
In his statement Kuchel recalled the heavy Atlantic Coast damage inflicted last winter and remarked, "Less dramatically, a section of the California Coast, in my native Orange County, has been undergoing periodically for almost two decades repeated attacks of relentless character".
Polio May Become Rare As Smallpox, Says OCMA Head
Local medical authorities feel that the recently reported case of small pox in New York has special significance for Orange Countians as the opening date of the county's mass oral polio vaccination program draws near.
Dr. William K. Friend, president of the Orange County Medical Association, points to the interest in the small pox report and says polio may become rare enough to cause similar interest when a case is reported in years to come.
The Sabin oral vaccine will be administered in doses of two drops on a cube of sugar. The medical association says infants over six weeks of age also should receive the oral vaccine. (A medicine dropper will be used to administer the vaccine to infants.) A donation of 25 cents a dose will be asked of those able to pay. No one, however, will be turned
Will Add Nurses
During the 1961-1962 academic year appointment of an engineering advisory committee was completed by Langsdorf, and a recent study of the entire California State Colleges instruction program indicated the appropriateness of an engineering curriculum at Orange State College. Master curricula study, made Chancellor Glenn S. Dumke's note at the request of the trustees of the California State Colleges, made specific suggestions concerning the special emphases in individual state colleges' curricula, and it particularly recommended a full program in electrical engineering at Orange State College.
This engineering course of study will be developed by the College and presented to the Trustees for their approval during the spring year, according to the Orange State College president.
Officers
Chairman of the newly-named Division of Science, Mathematics, Engineering will continue to Dr. Miles D. McCarthy, procuror of biology and chairman of biological science department.
Dr. William K. Friend, president of the Orange County Medical Association, points to the interest in the small pox report and says polio may become rare enough to cause similar interest when a case is reported in years to come.
Whether this happens in Orange County, however, depends upon how many persons attend the Sabin oral vaccination clinics this fall and winter, the physician says.
The medical association is sponsoring the mass clinics with the hope that 850,000 persons will take the oral vaccine.
The once dreaded small pox has become almost a medical oddity as a result of a universal vaccination program. Dr. Friend says the Sabin vaccine can produce the same results with polio if widespread immunization with the vaccine is achieved.
All Orange Countians young and old and including those who have had Salk injections, will be urged to take the oral vaccine.
Orange County will be joined by five other counties in the mass immunization program beginning in the fall. Each of the counties
