Rhyme and Reason By LOUISE METEER I remember summer. Other summers long gone by; Summers sweet with twilight, stars, pale moon, pale sky. I remember summer. Sound of early morning birds. Lazy days when heat lay close to stifle breathing; Great clouds gathered with some giant hand And clapped in thunderous anger seething. Now they are gone and with them sights and sounds and people I remember I briefly savour, treasures to be cherished And turnaway from knowing this September. The sights and sounds of Yesterday's summers. I would not exchange them for all the so-called green and gold of California. Let this be heresy, the fact is there: summer meant more when it moved swiftly into Autumn, and Autumn into a soft white blanket on a weary land. Mainly I have loved these seasons because inevitably, they brought the spring. I am an April child, and, if I were wealthy, I'd follow spring around the world! It is as well I can't, even this pleasant state of existence could become my rut! Evaluating the value of changing seasons, it seems to me that it was the challenge they offered, the necessity of change, that gave us a greater capacity for living. Then it would seem that, season or no season, there is a lesson to be learned here, that a definite change of pace within ourselves must count. How we should bend every effort to avoid burying ourselves in a pleasant, summer existence, all play and lazy living. What ever our age, there must be a time for work and a time for resting, a passing of the seasons every 24 hours of our day. Although necessity frequently has forced my full attention on the work side of the ledger the richest experiences, the greatest inspirations for achievement have come during leisure hours. This is possible when they are not wasted, when they are spent apart from physical effort. It isn't necessary to go far afield for this kind of rest, nor need it be a long period of time. A corner of the garden in early morning or just before dark; a stretch of beach where wet sands reflect the waning day; a half hour spent alone in quiet reflection. Here are your tranquilizers. Here are your springtimes, when new growth in ideas, new strength in purpose are close at hand to brighten your Septembers. Private Financing Offered On $40 Million Monorail LOS ANGELES — Private safety factor is a "fail-safe" sys... Private Financing Offered On $40 Million Monorail LOS ANGELES — Private financial interests today offered to underwrite immediate construction of a $40 million, 90 mph monorail rapid transit system for the Metropolitan Transit Authority. The proposed 17-mile-long line would link downtown Los Angeles with International Airport. The offer to finance and construct the automated system, which would carry passengers to the air terminal in 12 minutes, was made jointly by Goodell Monorail systems, Inc., and Paine, Webber, Jackson & Curtis, one of the nation's leading investment and underwriting firms. The irport-type monorail system can be completed within 18 months of the date MTA obtains rights-of-way, its sponsors said. George Cantelo, vice president and general manager of Goodell Monorail, appeared before the regular MTA board-meeting today to unveil the proposal for the monorail line. Financial aspects of the proposed $40 million revenue bond underwriting were presented by Stevens Manning, general partner. The airport-type monorail system in Paine, Webber. The "jet age" monorail system would utilize lightweight, air-conditioned cars, carrying 28 passengers. Detachable baggage pods would carry passenger luggage for quick unloading by terminal porters. The proposal suggested that the monorail route run from International Airport along Century Blvd. to Harbor Freeway, and thence along Harbor Freeway to a downtown terminal to be designated by MTA. The entire system would be operated from a central control panel, constantly monitored by closed circuit television. An additional safety factor is a "fail-safe" system, which permits the chief operator to override automatic controls if necessary. The Paine, Webber interests proposed to underwrite $40 million in MTA revenue bonds to construct the line. Provision would be made for revenues to amortize the bonds. The monorail line would be entirely separate from MTA's present surface lines. The Goodell-Paine, Webber joint engineering experts declared the Goodell system was operationally feasible, and that estimated revenues made the airport link financially practicable. Arthur C. Jenkins & Associates filed the report on the financial prospects of the project. John A. Houseman & Associates passed on the engineering questions involved. William L. Hoyt, president of Goodell Monrail, said the 17-mile line, if accepted by MTA would be the longest monorail line in the United States. The monorail system would be turned over to MTA in ready-to-operate condition when completed. While no mention of any other local monorail lines was contained in the offer, it was obvious at the MTA board meeting that successful completion of a high-speed route to the airport would have a bearing on other projected rapid transit development in the city. That private investment interests consider the airport monorail project sound investment also improves the outlook for rapid transit generally in the metropolitan area.
