New Scholarship Grants Added To Award Program The 1962 program of the Communities Scholarship Association of the Anaheim Union High School District was announced at the recent meeting of its board. Five new scholarship grants have been received to initiate the 1962 awards program. Joining the Association are the Anaheim Memorial Hospital Guild with two scholarships for pre-nursing or pre-medical girl students and the Anaheim Insurance Agents Association which plans to give $250 scholarships to a Western High senior and an Anaheim High senior. The Anaheim Lions Club will also participate this year. The 1961 Scholarship Association year showed great growth according to John F. McGrew, the C.S.A. president. Although only in its second year of development, some 45 scholarships were presented to Anaheim and Western High graduates. Cash value of the awards exceeded $6800. Recipients are in attendance at the University of California, UCLA, USC, Redlands, University of Oregon, Wheaton College, Harvard, Long Beach State, Baylor, the area junior colleges and many other schools. In June, 1961 the two district high schools graduated 1600 seniors and the 1962 graduating classes at Anaheim and Western Highs have 1800 seniors enrolled currently. Savanna and Magnolia High Schools opened their doors in September, 1961, but their first counselors at Anaheim, West Savanna or Magnolia High Schools or by contacting John McGrew at TA 8-6810. In June, 1961 the two district high schools graduated 1600 seniors and the 1962 graduating classes at Anaheim and Western Highs have 1800 seniors enrolled currently. Savanna and Magnolia High Schools opened their doors in September, 1961, but their first classes will not graduate until June of 1963. Loara High School, the district's fifth school, will open in Sept. 1962 with its first graduating class scheduled for June, 1965. The additional high schools are projected for the Anaheim Union High School District when ultimate enrollment arrives. A total graduating class of 10,000 is within range for the district. The challenge, according to McGrew, is to prepare these youngsters adequately in their pre-college programs and then encourage them and aid them in their collegiate careers. Costs are continuing to rise as are the demands for college graduates. Scholarships granted by the Association vary in amount from $50 to $600. The Communities Scholarship Association was formed to supplement national and state scholarship programs. Area service clubs businesses and individuals have provided scholarships. In addition to many scholarships provided by campus clubs at Western and Anaheim High Schools, 1961 awards were presented by the Anaheim Council of Church Women, Anaheim Junior Ebbell Club, Anaheim Soroptimist Club, Brookhurst Center Merchants, Buena Park Beta Sigma Phi (xi Eta Eta Chapter), Cypress V.F.W. Post No. 9847, Kiwanis Club of Southwest Anaheim, Rossmoor Woman's Club, Mrs. Vincenta Sorenson, and the Fourth District P.T.A. Council. On our trip around the building, we saw representations of Groucho, Chico, and Harpo Marx, Wallace Beery and Marie Dressler, Laurel and Hardy, Ken Maynard, Tom Mix, Gary Cooper, Harold Lloyd, James Dean, Ward Bond, Cantinflas, Lionel, Ethel and John Barrymore. Charles Laughton, Gina Lollabrigida, Marilyn Monroe and many others. We were told at the start, and in preliminary publicity, that three artists were responsible for the works. This immediately became obvious to us. Although we had no idea who was the creators of which images, we could see that some were definitely superior to others. The differences were so great, in fact, that the good ones were excellent, almost perfect, while we felt, the bad ones were almost impossible. Among the impressive figures were those of Ken Maynard, Tom Mix, Gary Cooper, James Dee Wallace Beery, Humphry Higgart, Ward Bond, Harry Carr Charley Chaplin, and Charlie Laughton. Among the most disappointment were those of Gina Lollabrigida and Marilyn Monroe. Our critical-eyed Managing Editor, a former public relations man himself, remarked that if he was Marilyn's agent he would sue. Our Women's Editor candidly commented that if the figure of Gina was true representation, she herself had more of the necessary equipment than the Italian sex goddess... the M.E. and I stopped there, unable to come up with a reply that would not give our statuesque compatriot the impression we were being 'fresh'. All things considered, though the consensus of opinion was that it will be worth the price of a mission to see at least those figures which have been done well. And since Mr. Jurras' claim that only 70 percent of the work were completed was borne out by our inspection, it is reasonable to assume that the unfinished displays will have many superior figures. At least I am going to make another trip after the official opening tomorrow. PENSIONERS Are You Having Difficulty With Your Hearing? Miller stated, "and justifiably so, based on the tremendous increase in service demands of the United Fund Agencies."
