BUSINESS Review THE SIEGLER CORPORATION, of Los Angeles, has obtained an option to purchase all of the capital stock of Trion Instruments, Inc., of Ann Arbor, Michigan, which is engaged in research and manufacture in the field of lasers, it was announced today. PROSSER INDUSTRIES, ANAHEIM, has added a new series of larger units to its line of portable Submersible Pumps. The Model 1500 Series is designed for pumping water from lakes, swimming polls, or similar sources for fire fighting, camp water supply, etc. THE PACIFIC COAST STOCK EXCHANGE, Los Angeles division, will present the 8th annual award to the Junior Achievement company issuing the best report to its stockholders, according to an announcement made today (April 24) by Thomas P. The sporting prowess of colleges and universities across the nation — even across the sea — is at stake with the issuance by the Elephant Racing Club of Orange County State College of invitations to the first intercollegiate elephant racing meet in human history. Plans call for this historic event to be part of the Day of the Titan festivities on May 11, according to Everett Moore, Bapu Mahout of the ERC. In deference to the venerable place in American educational history occupied by several of the large Eastern universities, Moore continued, invitations have been sent to Harvard University (founded 1626) to Yale Universi­vated but meet officials fear that distance may keep them from sending their entrants in time. Western High Elects New Officers for Student Council Ten new officers have been elected for next year's Western High student council, and seventeen more offices will be filled soon. Dave Steele has been elected Student Body President. He will be replacing Tim Ingram, present A.S.B. president, on May 14. Vice president for next year is Steve Brauch, replacing Terry Miller. Alice Kusaka will replace Linda Fowler as secretary, and Robert Yukihiro will turn the treasury over to Steve Alquist. Sandy Miller is the new commissioner of activities. Commissioner of social affairs will be Vicki Daulton; safety and welfare, Janie Way; pep, Sherri Oliphant; publicity, Sharon Harrington; and athletics Tom Mills. At present, the commissioners are Charlene Sparkes, Mary Muzikar, Valarie Bickel, Loe Ann Phillips. Throughout the year these students have planned dances, assemblies, pep rallies, elections, and have passed resolutions in council meetings for school improvements. Robert J. Bloecker, director of activities, has aided the students in their council activities. He will continue directing student activities with next years council members. School taxes on property throughout the State also reached an all-time high in 1961-62, with the total an astronomical $1,227,-002,749 or 83 per cent above the 1960-1970 school tax levy for 1956-57. The state-wide school levy totals first broke through into the million dollar level last year when the tax take reached $1,092,407,-773, and this year's total is $135 million more. The total of state money, in addition to the local property tax bill, will reach $715,200,494 for 1961-62. Murdy, Jr., Orange County Republican leader and member of the California state senate for the past 10 years, announced this week he is endorsing the candidacy of Thomas H. Kuchel for re-election to the United States Senate. "We cannot replace Tom Kuchel in Washington with a newcomer," Senator Murdy declared. "We must not throw away his valuable seniority. "I will support him all the way," Murdy continued. "One reason I am doing it is because I think he has been true to the Republican platform — even though personally I may not agree with everything in it." Senator Murdy, a field crop and citrus farmer, has lived in Orange County for 52 years. He is president of the board of Hoag Presbyterian Hospital, Newport Beach, and a trustee of Whittier College.
