(Gazette Photo) New Cars To Be Equipped With Emission Control in One Year New cars sold in California will have to be equipped with crank case emission control devices one year from today following approval of four such devices by the State Motor Vehicle Pollution Control Board here yesterday. The device will be mandatory on all new cars starting in April, 1963, under provisions of the California law. The four devices receiving the MVPCB's unanimous approval were Carter Carburetor of St. Louis, Rechester Products Division of General Motors, Rochester, N.Y., Walker Manufacturing Co. of Jackson, Mich., and Volkswagen of America, Inc. Top price for the devices would be $6.50 factory installed, with an average cost of $5. They operate by returning crankcase or blowby gases to the intake manifold or air cleaner and burning them in the engine. MVPCB engineers estimate that this reduces hydrocarbons by about 25 per cent.
