Group Makes Plans For Junior Guild (Continued from Page One) Reports and Recommendations. The motion passed a 4-1 vote, however, Schutte voting against, and Anaheim's City Council will vote on a new mayor the third week of every April. The 7 p.m. meeting of the council opened with new councilman Jack C. Dutton nominating Coons for the mayor's chair. Fred T. Krein seconded the motion. Krein's action surprised many because it had been assumed he was for Schutte. When the vote was taken, Coons was voted in unanimously, Schutte adding his vote to the rest. Dutton and Krein nominated and seconded Chandler's elevation to the mayor-pro-tem's seat. Only 2nd Since Pearson Coons is only the second mayor Anaheim has had following the 20-year reign of former mayor Charles A. Pearson. Schutte succeeded Pearson. In claiming the seat of mayor as superfluous and without meaning, Schutte pointed to the fact that Anaheim's mayor has no other power than to sit as chairman of the council. His vote carries no more weight than any other councilman and he can initiate no action as mayor. In addition to sitting as chairman of the council, he also signs official documents and represents the city on ceremonial occasions. Coons has been a member of the City Council for six years. He and Schutte are the only two councilmen left who served on the City Council with Pearson as mayor. Chandler has been on the council for two years. Schutte was reelected to his third term as councilman two weeks ago, polling the highest total vote in city history. Krein and Dutton are two new members to gain seats in that same election. Schutte Charged Schutte was charged with attempting to run in a 'fixed slate' during the elections. Krein was claimed to be one. The other, John S. Wright, was nosed out by Dutton in a tense final hour rally. Coons has long been vocal in his opposition to 'perpetuating' anyone in the mayor's chair. In 1958, when Pearson was elected to his final term as mayor prior to his retirement, Coons was one of the two who voted against Pearson, who had already been in office for 18 years. During that election, Schutte was elected mayor-pro-tem, but had a chance to be mayor. He had only to vote for himself, but instead nominated Pearson. He became mayor 'following Pearson's retirement. Easter Services Slated in Canyon Easter morning Sunrise Services are slated at Edendale, a Christian retreat in Carbon Canyon. This will be the second year Edendale has sponsored the services under leadership of Mr. and Mrs. Sid Sybrandy, owners of the 97 acre canyon development. This year, several churches will join the services with their entire congregations including the Friends Church in Yorba Linda. Rev. Bill Freeman, pastor of the Yorba Linda church will preach the sermon. Services will begin at 5:15 a.m. After services, breakfast will be served by volunteers who are already making plans, according to Sybrandy. Volunteers met this week to discuss the "Master Plan," which will provide for 1,000 Orange County residents in the canyon. Six pancake kitchens along members to gain seats in that same election. The Ladies Guild of St. Jude Hospital has for some time been considering the organization of Junior Guild to be made up teenage, high school girls. Such organizations, under the name Candy Stripers, have been successfully in a number of hospitals and many request they be received from girls in the age group to form such an organization at St. Judge. Mrs. John F. Gardner, current chairwoman of the Junior Guild and responsible for development of the proposed group, stated that all qualifications for members have not, as yet, been determined. Preliminary discussions, however, indicate that a girl will required to have her parents' consent and furnish reliable references. She will be of good character, dependable and have least a "C" average in school. Membership will automatically terminate at the completion of her senior year. An annual dues of $1 will be charged for membership and members will be expected to fulfill their own uniforms. They will be no meetings or social functions involved. Membership will be limited to 50 girls. No plans are being made at this time if admit boys although this may be a future project, depending on the success of the girls' organization. Applicants will be chosen after submitting an application and receiving an interview by the Junior Guild Chairwoman, Mrs Gardner. A number of names for the group have been suggested but this time none has been selected. If present plans materialize, the Guild hopes to begin accepting applications on or after May None will be accepted prior to that time. Further information will be published when plans have been completed and defined qualifications determined. Lincoln—Anaheim Library’s Pinocchio Celebrates 33rd Birthday with Kids’ Party Pinocchio, a little puppet in the Children’s Room of the Anaheim Public Library and a replica of the famed original, reminds everyone that this is National Library Week. Going one step further, the little puppet, who recently celebrated his 33rd birthday at a party held in his honor and attended by 90 of the library’s younger readers, urges Americans to make every week library week. The puppet came to the Anaheim Public Library in 1929 as a purchase from the Macmillan Publishing Company. Since that time, Pinocchio has become something of a mascot for the library; and on one occasion, has been the recipient of nation-wide publicity. He had the misfortune of being buried under an avalanche of books during the earthquake of 1933, and suffered a cracked head and a broken nose in consequence. Back from the doll hospital, he was returned to the shelf good as new. A few years laer, enroute to the hospital again prior to being sent to a pioneer celebration in Ogden, Utah, he was caught in the 1938 flood and was later found wedged between the cushions of a car in which he had been riding and which had been swept along by the torrent and buried under a pile of debris. Pinocchio was once again repaired and sent to Ogden in order to keep his appointment there. Because of his adventures, he arrived late, and explanations were called for. The wire services picked this up, and, for a time, Pinocchio was somewhat of a celebrity. Since then, his life has been fairly uneventful; but once each year, Pinocchio is taken from the shelf where he keeps a never-endiging vigil on the activities in the Children’s Room to remind everyone about National Library Week and to attend the birthday party held annually in his honor.
