New Medical Aid Draws Applicants
Nearly 12,000 persons have applied for benefits under California's new medical aid for the aged program which started Jan. 1.
J. M. Wedemeyer, state director of Social Welfare said a spot check of county welfare departments showed applications have been received from 11,786 persons in the first two weeks of the program operation. Counties are processing the applications to determine eligibility.
The new program provides medical care to persons over 65 whose income is not sufficient to meet their medical needs, and who have been confined in a hospital or nursing home for at least 30 days.
Half of the applicants are in the Southern California area, with Los Angeles County receiving the largest number — 3,584, Orange County had 307.
Cost of the program is estimated to run $30 million for the first six months of 1962. It is financed 50 percent federal, 25 percent state, and 25 percent county. It is California's implementation of the federal Kerr-Mills bill passed in 1960 by Congress.
