ANDY SAYS BUSY FELLOW — Andy Anaheim in some of his many poses and roles as he goes about his job promoting the city and providing visual aid clarification in many City Chamber of Commerce pamphlets and motions. That Big "A" Births BUSY FELLOW — Andy Anaheim in some of his many poses and roles as he goes about his job promoting the city and providing visual aid clarification in many City Chamber of Commerce pamphlets and motions. That Big "A" Leads the Way By DORIS LEE Gazette Feature Writer You see him all over Anaheim, looking through binoculars, bowing from the waist, waving a greeting, pointing the way, leaning on signs. His body is a huge letter "A", he has little flat feet, long skinny arms and a head like a bug, with a bulbous nose, expressive brows, two strands of hair, no ears and a wide grin. He is Anaheim's goodwill ambassador. His name is Andy Anaheim. And you can find him in his various poses decorating anything municipal, including city maps, your light and water bill, roadside signs guiding you out of Disneyland into the heart of Anaheim, and all the literature that comes out of the offices of the Chamber of Commerce. As a matter of fact, Andy Anaheim is the brainchild of the Chamber of Commerce. The idea for a city emblem was conceived six years ago shortly after the opening of Walt Disney's fabulous "Magic Kingdom." The tremendous influx of tourists to the park could be an asset to the city if properly promoted, and what better way than with a friendly little character, it was reasoned. And who should be better qualified than Disney? "So we submitted our idea to the Disney studios in Burbank," says George Strachan, general manager of the Chamber of Commerce, "and they designed Andy in five different poses for us." The cost of the emblem is nothing; it is Disney's contribution to Anaheim. The Chamber has a written contract with the studios giving it sole permission to use Andy Anaheim in any way it sees fit provided it's strictly for promotion of the city. "In other words," says Strachan, "it can't be used commercially or politically or in any way that is not for the good of the city. Municipal and institutional groups may use the emblem with approval of the Chamber. Disney studios leave all decisions up to us." Occasionally a request comes up that is difficult to decide upon, he says, in which case he contacts the Disney attorney, Bob Foster, who is located here in Anaheim, and he gives the final judgement. The little emblem was used without permission on a couple of occasions, according to Strachan, but that was some time ago, and there have been no unpleasant incidents since. The city manager's office has made full use of Andy and he decorates the house organ entitled "Andy Says" which contains current events concerning municipal activities and city employees. A recent proposal to put Andy on the "slow-children" warning signs was voted down because it was feared motorists, who are accustomed to the silhouette of a child, would become confused. But the Chamber is currently campaigning to have Andy painted on the trash trucks and all the street trash containers, says Strachan. You can't say it wouldn't be apropos — the little bug fighting the litterbug. Births MARTIN LUTHER HOSPITAL FEAGAN, Mr. and Mrs., 1319 N.
