Unsung Heroes: No. 3 Chance Meeting Launched Career It was nearly 18 years ago and Katie Eden, recently widowed, was mowing her lawn when the turning point in her life came. Rudy Boysen, then superintendent of gardening at Anaheim City Park, (Pearson Park), was passing by and asked her if she'd be interested in caring for the flowers and plants in the picnic area of the park and doubling as park hostess on Sundays and holidays. She took the job June 22, 1944 and has been there ever since. "For the first 12 years," she recalls, "I took care of all the plants and flowers in the picnic area, took reservations for picnic tables and acted as hostess and policewoman on Sundays and holidays." Since 1950 Mrs. Eden, who lives with her pet poodle at 308 N. Lemon, has devoted all of her time to the greenhouse, the lath house and the nursery, propagating new plants, and caring for tropicals and other plants too tender to be out in the park. In the greenhouse, coleus is propagated on a large scale in a propagating or "hot" bench, which is an enclosed area kept at 70 degrees and where tiny cuttings are planted in sand. "We use a lot of coleus in the park because the vari-colored leaves make big patches of brightness," she says. Other plants in the greenhouse include spider plants, lelia orchid, Billbergia which grows on a cork oak bark and produces a red spray type bloom, and aechmea which produces a blue berry-like cluster. In the lath house, which is open to the public, is a 27-year-old Algerian Ivy with a main trunk measuring 12 inches, huge monstera plants, begonias, fuchsias and a large variety of ferns and potted plants. The potted plants are loaned out to wedding parties for church decorations at no cost to the borrower except for transportation. Under Rudy Boysen's expert guidance, Mrs. Eden learned a great deal about gardening, she says, especially about tropicals and exotic plants. "Some of the specimens are still around," she says. "Among them are a monkey hand tree from Guatemala which produces a flower shaped like a hand, a silk floss tree from Brazil, an exotic tree with a trunk of thorns and a Bunya-Bunya tree from India. Boysen died six years ago. Vic Rudy is now supersintendent. Mrs. Eden has always loved gardening, she relates, having gotten her start early in life from her father. E. Ward, vice-president-construction, announced recently. About 250 apartments will be ready for occupancy by the end of March. Ward said. When she was an eighth grade student at Fremont School, then a grammar school, all the students were required to have gardens and she won a prize for having the best one, she recalls. "I remember the teacher went around to every single garden before awarding the prize," she says. "Of course, in those days the classes weren't quite so large as they are today." People aren't the same now either, she says. In her early days at the park people took more interest in the special plants and trees. Today there isn't the time. "So we emphasize bright colors and showy flowers," she says. "That seems to please them more." Musical Group Receives Check The Orange County Philharmonic Society recently received a $1,000 check from the Ford Motor Company Fund in support of the Society's program to bring outstanding music to Orange County. The presentation was made on behalf of the Board of Trustees of the Fund by Dr. Lloyd P. Smith, research director of the Research Laboratory at Ford Motor Company's Aeronutronic Division. Dr. Smith is a member of the Board of Directors of the Philharmonic Society and chairman of the Commerce and Industry Committee. FASHIONS IN SPRING PLEATED DRAPERIES WITH...
