Cleona Woodruff Local Pastor Transfered Is Dimes Queen 9-Year-Old Anaheim Pollo Victim To Reign At 1962 OC Horse Show Anaheim has added another queen to its list of royal contributions to Orange County. Pretty, winsome, nine-year-old Cleona Woodruff has been chosen Queen of Orange County's 1962 March of Dimes Horse Show. The show is set for the Fairgrounds at Costa Mesa, Jan. 21. Cleona is the daughter of Lee and Rita Woodruff, 2843 W. Orange Ave. She is the youngest of five sisters and one brother. She was struck by polio almost eight years ago and continues receiving therapy for her polio problems. She attends the Woodcrest Special Education Unit in Fullerton and is in the third grade. Mrs. Woodruff began working with Cleona on various sewing projects almost three years ago. Cleona's father put together an attachment to the sewing machine which allowed the girl to overcome her handicaps and work at the machine, in her wheel chair. Last year, Mrs. Woodruff conceived the idea of selling the various items Cleona had made, at the March of Dimes Horse Show and Breakfast. It was at this time the Horsemen became acquainted with Cleona, and Jim McCandlish, this year's Horse Show chairman, decided to make her queen for 1962. And to help Mrs. Woodruff in her sale at the coming show, the by the Associated Riding Clubs of Orange County, the Sheriff's Reserve and the All American Markets. A ranch breakfast will begin at 7 a.m. Entertainment will be featured during the breakfast and hot food from noon on will be served from Riding Club chuck wagons. Drawings will include two Schwinn bicycles. The Horse Show will begin at 9 a.m. and continue through the day. New pastoral appointments were announced this week for the Rev. Dan R. Kennedy, associate minister of First Methodist Church, Anaheim, and the Rev. Russell W. Hafner, pastor of Ocean Park Methodist Church. Bishop Gerald Kennedy appointed Kennedy will go to Ocean Park Methodist Church. Appointment is effective Jan. 15. Kennedy, 29, a native of Colorado Springs, Colo., earned his undergraduate degree at Pomona College, and bachelor of divinity at Union Theological Seminary, New York. While in school he worked as youth director in several churches, then on graduation became associate minister at First Methodist, Anaheim. Beta Sigma Phi Schedules Ball The Northern Orange County Council of Beta Sigma Phi will hold its Valentine Coronation Ball at the Anaheim Elks Lodge, Saturday, Feb. 17, 1962. This event marks the fifth annual Coronation sponsored by this Council whose fourteen chapters are represented in Fullerton, Anaheim, Garden Grove and Buena Park. The general chairman is Mrs. Samuel Butler of Upsilon Omicron, Anaheim. Representatives from the various chapters assisting Mrs. Butler are: Mrs. Paul Noak, Chi Pi, na Park, Jim Langworthy, Xi tions; Mrs. Kenneth Ckelton, Pi Pi, Garden Grove, flowers; Mrs. Charles Malstrom, Sigma Mu, Fullerton, programs; and Mrs. Laurie Baker, Tau, Anaheim, publicity. Three committee meetings have been held and the fourth is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 25th at the home of Mrs. Butler. The all day affair is sponsored Sunkist PTA To View Film Today Dr. Sydney J. Adler and Dr. May Rich will show a film, "The Shy Child" to Sunkist PTA, today, 7:30 p.m. kindergarten, Room 1. Dr. Adler is chief of pediatrics at Orange County Hospital. He is also a member of the teaching staff at USC and UCLA. New Water GM... Robert A. Skinner, assistant chief engineer of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California for the past 10 years, has taken over the top administrative position of general manager and chief engineer of the District. The new water agency chief was selected by the District's Board of Directors to succeed Robert B. Diemer, who retired at the end of 1961 after more than 30 years with the District. Adult Classes Open Registrations for adult classes are still being taken at the Santa Ana Adult Education office, 17th and Bristol St., said Otis C. Knighton, director. Winter term classes started on Jan. 2, and all those interested in improving themselves by taking more training are urged to register as soon as possible, Knighton said. Junior Ebells in Welfare Meeting The Junior Ebell Club held their Social Welfare Section meeting at the Ebell clubhouse where Mrs. Jack Louis, gerontology chairman, was in charge of a special program which has been planned with the help of Orange County Hospital. Movies of the gerontology ward, including their physical and occupational therapy, and taken especially for this meeting were shown. Mrs. Phillip Roseberry, international affairs chairman, asked members to bring clothes for all ages, kitchen utensils, toys, canned foods, etc., for the Aid to Mexico project wherein these items are delivered and distributed to needy people south of the border. Mrs. Gordon Davison, hostess for the evening, will be assisted by Mmes. Roch Conklin, A. C. Cook, Eugne Cox, John Cruell, Raymond Cross, Robert Dennis, George Blinn and M. Carl Herron. Hopefuls To Show Before GOP Meeting Republican aspirants to state and Federal offices will be interviewed by Republican Men's Club, beginning yesterday. The meetings will be held at the Edison School, 2063 Orange Ave., Santa Ana. Each session is expected to begin at 7:30 p.m. Three candidates from the 70th District were interviewed yesterday. They were Herbert Arnois, George Honold, and James Whetmore. Slated for next Wednesday a trio from the 34th. They include William Bridgeford, Robert Geier, and Jack Moen. Jan. 24, John Briggs, 69th, and Robert Badham and John Schmitz from the 71st will appear. On the 31st, John McGrew, 34th, will be interviewed by the group. Also on that day, and the following weeks, candidates who have not announced themselves will meet with the Republican Men. Dr. Walter James To Be Speaker Dr. Walter James, chairman of social work for the Presbytery of Los Angeles, will be guest speaker at the Jan. 21 meeting of The Seafarers Group at the First Presbyterian Church in Santa Ana. Licenses At B.A. Office Annual license plate renewal statements, addressed to most car owners on record in the State, are currently in the mail from Department of Motor Vehicles. Motorists in the Anaheim area are invited to make their applications at the Bank of America NT & SA, Anaheim main office, at 150 E. Center St. where a temporary registration office is open through Feb. 5. Department of Motor vehicles personnel stationed temporarily in the bank will be authorized to accept fees as shown on the complete punched card statements, and to issue the 1982 silver and green renewal sticker for the rear plate, with a validated registration card for the new year. Any transfer or change in type of vehicle registration must be taken to a regular Department of Motor Vehicles field office, as the bank stations are equipped to handle only straight renewal applications submitted with the prepared punched-card statement. The banks likewise do not handle the special small stickers issued for motorcycles so that Service Awards At Disneyland Mrs. Norman Chandler will be guest of honor at the Disneyland Community Service Awards banquet Jan. 16 in the Gourmet Restaurant, Disneyland Hotel, Awards Chairman Major General Marion L. Dwson announced today. Disneyland grants of $1,000 each will be awarded to eight Orange County Service organizations on this date. One of the eight organizations will receive and additional $1,000 grant for outstanding community service. Invitations to the banquet have been extended to the 62 service groups participating in this year's program. No prior announcement of award recipients will be made before the noon banquet, according to General Dawson. CFWC Meeting Will Be Feb. 3 The California Federation of Women's Clubs, Area C, will meet Feb. 3 at the Flamingo Inn in Arcadia, it was reported by Mrs. William Matteson, federation extension chairman, at the regular monthly meeting of the Junior Ebell Club. Meeting will start at 9:30 a.m. with a "Pack-a-sack" lunch, at noon. Mrs. A. C. Frink, of the city of Orange, and area chairman for all of Orange County, will be official hostess. The Southern Californiia-Southern Nevada area is made up of $2 councils which represent twenty-two different denominations. Mrs. Troy Simmons of El Cajon, president for the group will hear special reports which will include one on the observance of the 75th anniversary of the World Day of Prayer last February, which had set its world-wide missions support in the sum of $750,000. Visiting Hours at Hospital Changed New afternoon visiting hours for Garden Park General Hospital, located at Gilbert and ball, Anaheim, were announced this week by Paul O'Neill, administrator. The new time will be 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., O'Neill said. There will be no change for the evening visiting period. The change in the afternoon period was made to relieve the parking situation at the hospital. It also makes visiting hours for the afternoon period at many hospitals in the area at the same time, thus avoiding confusion. Coming to install new officers at the afternoon session is Mrs. Theodore Wallace, national president for the UCW, who lives in Kansas City, Missouri. The Southern California area is represented on the National Board of Managers by the current president of the State Council and by the second representative Mrs. Harold Fanacht of La Verne. Also, recently appointed by the national president, Mrs. Wallace, to serve on the National Advisory Committee for public relations for the next three years is Mrs. Robert Prentice, state chairman for public relations, who lives in Long Beach.
