(Continued from Page 1) column that much of their fear is groundless, ignited by rumor and gun-jumping opportunists, the people themselves are taking positive action to combat what they sincerely feel to be true. They know this is a representative government and that government officials are responsible to citizens who elect them into office. They have, in the past, not only made their interests known, but also have demanded from their representatives in the City government that something be done. Often such movements are triggered more by emotion than logic, but emotional action is often a great deal more to be desired than stupid apathy. This is not to say, of course, that the Sunkist Civic Association is motivated primarily by emotion. They have, at their head, Ed Collings, a pilot of some 10 years experience with Trans-World Airlines (TWA), and he feels the threat is a real one. (See page 1 story for more details). As children, we were moved by fairy tales of beauty imprisoned in one form or another—Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, princesses in castle dungeons. As adults, we are still moved by the handicapping or marring of beauty. Cleona Woodruff is a specific instance I have in mind. Anyone who has been close to the pretty nine-year-old victim of polio and has seen her smile, could not help be saddened. But whether it was Cleona's misfortune, or simply the fact that Lee and Rita Woodruff are that kind of parents (and I suspect the latter case), Cleona and I four sisters and one brother have something too few other children have today... a close knit family; a light-hearted loving attitude for each other; a real knowledge of the often mocked spirit of togetherness. One immediately sees the subtle difference, that they obey their parents, not through fear of punishment or hope for reward, but because they love and respect them. There must be several large libraries full of books telling parents how to raise children, etc., but we suspect the Woodruffs are not the kind of people to look in books for answers to what they have accomplished. It's some-think like the saying: "If you ain't got it, there's nobody goin' to give it to you." —Who pays for advertising? Nobody. It pays for itself. When Autonetics moved into the area, most of the talk of the airfield died away. Then, last week, at the Tuesday meeting of the City Council, Co-Ordinated innocently walked into a hornet's nest when they petitioned the City to allow them to build a small landing strip to facilitate the work they are doing for Autonetics. The following day, calls began pouring into the City Planning Office and residents of the Sunkist area began gathering to discuss the new threat. Thursday and Friday, Mrs. R. D. (Dorothy) Beck, a member of the Sunkist Civic Association, spoke before several groups, including the Sunkist PTA and the Sycamore PTA Board. The result of these meetings, and the Thursday evening meeting of the Sunkist Civic Association, resulted in letters being sent to the City Council, and a resolution by the groups to have representatives present at the Jan. 23 hearing in the City Council chambers. When the protests came to the attention of Messenger and Co-Ordinated Construction, Messenger at first announced that plans for the field would be abandoned. "We don't want to have trouble with anyone in town," he told the Gazette. "We have done and are doing business all over the country and have never had trouble with the citizens of any area." The plane will make, at the most, two trips a day, quite possibly only two trips in three days. Purpose will be to land supervisory personnel in the work area. "When we work on these national defense projects, they allow us a certain amount of time — a short time — to finish the job and we have to take advantage of any modern convenience we can," Messenger said. "I can easily understand the attitude of the people in the Sunkist area. Their property values are in danger, not to mention their children. This would certainly be the case if a large airfield or large planes were intended for use. But our flight plan would be nowhere in the vicinity of their homes or their school." "Besides, we own the land on which the strip is to be constructed. We have no intention of letting anyone take it over as a permanent airfield. We have our own plans for developing the property." The proposed temporary strip is approximately a mile from the Sunkist elementary school. The Sunkist Civic Association members come from an area bordered on the east by Sunkist St., on the north by La Palma Ave., on the south by the Anaheim Rd., and on the west by New St. There are several other housing developments in the same general vicinity and similar radius. Homes in the area are valued between 23,000 and $28,000. Ed Collings, president of the Association, and a pilot for TransWorld Airlines, feels the threat from the County is somewhat less than any kind of airfield in her under any conditions, for a reason." To shed further light on the battle, the Gazette spoke to Phillips Tuesday. The new chairman said he knew nothing of the County Ordinated - Sunkist Civic differences other than what he read in the newspapers. As far as an airfield in the Placentia-East Anaheim in an area concerned, it was something not even to be considered at this present time. Basically, the initial uproff over the airfield in the area was little more than an over-blow rumor. "They got hold of the master plan somehow and misunderstood the whole thing. A master plan does not, by any means, say that something is going or not going in an area. A master plan is not ing more than an educated guess." "We have not gone into any plans whatsoever, concerning airfield in the East Anaheim Placentia vicinity. The master plan itself was not drawn up us. We hired an outside firm Lockheed Air Terminal, Inc., make a survey of the area and draw up a master plan of possible sites for airfields in Oran County. The East Anaheim-Placentia area was only one of those they proposed." Another was in the Cleveland National Forest, when and if they ever get water there. When the protests came to the attention of Messenger and Co-Ordinated Construction, Messenger at first announced that plans for the field would be abandoned. "We don't want to have trouble with anyone in town," he told the Gazette. "We have done and are doing business all over the country and have never had trouble with the citizens of any area. We don't want any now. We had no idea they would feel this way about it." But the following day, after the peak of the furore had died, he reconsidered. Speaking again to a Gazette reporter, he said: "We need that field pretty badly, in order to fulfill our obligation on this contract. It is just possible that there is some misunderstanding and it can be straightened out. I am going to try and talk to them (Sunkist Civic Association) and see if we can't come to some understanding on each other's position." Messenger then went on to explain the proposed field is slated to be put in an area approximately 1509 feet east of Dowling, between the Riverside Freeway and Corona St. The only plane intended to land on the strip will be a Cessna 172, a one-motor plane come from an area bordered on the east by Sunkist St., on the north by La Palma Ave., on the south by the Anaheim Rd., and on the west by New St. There are several other housing developments in the same general vicinity and similar radius. Homes in the area are valued between 23,000 and $28,000. Ed Collings, president of the Association, and a pilot for TransWorld Airlines, feels the threat from the County is a very real one. "We are not so much opposed to Co-ordinated's small landing strip as such," he pointed out while talking to the Gazette. "It's primarily that we feel the county may use the existence of the temporary strip as an excuse to resume plans for the original idea of a county secondary airfield." Mrs. Beck, in her explanation to the Gazette, said, "I saw the master plan they had for this area. This was listed as "Site D" on the plan and it was supposed to be ready for use in 1962. I don't trust them. This might work as a wedge to get the airfield in. "We have our children, our school, our property, and the new, proposed high school to con- draw up a master plan of possible sites for airfields in Orange County. The East Anaheim-Penticenta area was only one of those they proposed. "Another was in the Cleveland National Forest, when and if they ever get water there. "As I said, a master plan is more than an educated guess. It is based on certain ideal conditions an airfield — or any other proposal for that matter — should have. Some of these are proximity to industry, access to ground transportation, and most important, an area that promises not become heavily congested and built up. "The plan was made before building in the Sunkist and East Anaheim area began. I would say that under present condition with the housing boom swinging toward East Anaheim, that area as a potential airfield would no longer be feasible. "At present, we are concerned with the enlarging of the Orange County airfield, near Newpoor and Costa Mesa. We feel that field will be sufficient for the next 20 years." "But I will say this, if Orang County is to continue to grow,..." Otherwise our growth will be strangled. "We are not, however, going to build any airfields in an area which might possibly be overrun by residential areas in the next 20 years. During the past year, 168 airfields in California alone have been closed because of enbroaching residential areas." What Messenger, Collings, Mrs. Beck and the Sunkist Civic Association agree to today, may not definitely be known until Tuesday, when the landing stripe comes up for its public hearing before the City Council, but if what Phillips said is true, it is possible that the East Anaheim-Placeneia airfield is really only a "ghost airfield", a field built on rumor and over-blown enthusiasm. But the concern of Sunkist and other residents of the area is very real and the threat to their property, children, school and lives, is just as real. Co-Ordinated, too, is affected by the ethereal field. They have a national defense project to complete in approximately 60 days. They must have felt the necessity for the field or they would not have gone to the trouble to petition for the field and the expense to build it.
