State Senator California retail businessmen received a brochure in the mail recently outlining the new sales tax charges to retail customers under a new law that became effective September 15th. The new sales tax table was provided by the State Board of Equalization after the legislation approved a law to establish an official sales tax list of charges on retail sales. It is hoped this will clear up the constant complaint from Californians about being charged wrongly for sales tax. Tables of charges had previously been printed by retail merchant associations. Only one county (Siskiyou) in California has the three percent sales tax charge. All other counties, including Orange County, have the four percent rate, three cents going to the state, and one divided among the cities and unincorporated county areas. It is all collected by the state from the retailer, and the one percent returned to each county. The new schedule shows the total amount that can be collected from a customer on sales up to $100. Copies of the table have been sent out to trade associations and printers to insure adequate coverage in the business world.
