ANAHEIM COMMENT
ordinance passed last week allowing residents to construct fallout shelters in front yards.
Two high-rise buildings, both hotels, have reached the stage where they are no longer developer's dreams.
Conditional use permit has been approved for erection of a 10-story hotel on Harbor east of Disneyland. Another 11-story hotel has been approved on West St., directly behind the present Disneyland Hotel.
Anaheim apparently wants its share of tall buildings and intends to get them.
City Attorney Preston Turner has been instructed by councilmen to investigate the possibility of establishing special high-rise zones within the city.
Currently, the code limits the height of buildings in heavy commercial zones to six stories, or 75 feet. Anyone desiring to build higher than 75 feet must obtain a variance.
What appears most striking is the paradox of the city going up in one direction and down in the other.
According to the new fallout shelter ordinance, builders will be required to locate them underneath front lawns or driveways. The catch is proper landscaping must be provided to shield air vents and other portions that project out of the ground.
The main point is that the "Cold War" has brought progress to Anaheim even if it does mean adopting a kind of "split personality" expansion and building-wise.
