Campus Activities Boost Grades,
SAC President Tells Educators
Student campus activities develop a climate for academic achievement, Dr. John E. Johnson, president of Santa Ana College, told members of the American Association of Junior Colleges is a major address at the organization's convention in Washington, D.C., last Friday.
Studies also show that campus leaders receive higher grades, Johnson declared.
"In the last decade American colleges have become definitely conscious of the educational possibilities of this (campus activities) so-called curricular program," he said, "because the main purpose of education appears to be that of developing good citizens."
"National accrediting associations have taken a definite stand for a functional curriculum, encouraging effective activity programs with adequate supervision.
Dr. James B. Conant has said 'the most important single factor in modern liberal education is that education which a student receives from another.'"
the college Student Union, being the focus of all student academic activities, must be regarded as the most important instructional laboratory on the campus."
Citing other advantages of the student life program, Johnson quoted research studies showing that "invariably, those who participate in activities receive higher grades, earn more money after graduation, and are better adjusted than those who do not take part in campus activities. . . Likewise, personnel managers in interviewing prospective candidates invariably are concerned with a student's campus participation."

LAW IN ACTION
GOOD WILL
Each year business men spend millions to advertise their goods, their services, and their businesses. Without trade marks, service marks and trade names, we could not have mass production and sale of goods at low prices.
So the law protects as property these symbols of good will.
1. Your trade mark may be a word or words, or an emblem or a device to distinguish your goods from products of other manufacturers on store shelves and in the market place.
2. A word that merely describes the product it identifies is not a trademark. It cannot be registered or protected as such, for all makers have the same right to tell of their goods in every day descriptive language.
3. Much like a trademark, a service mark is associated with services, rather than goods.
4. The first thing a company should do is to have a search made to find out in advance the availability for use and registration of a given mark.
Such searches often reveal conflicting marks that might well cause serious legal problems later.
5. After adoption and use, you may register a trade or service mark.
6. The law keeps others from taking your mark or using one likely to fool people into buying other products thinking they are yours.
7. Your trade name is the name under which you do business: it identifies the person or company with whom one is dealing. Usually a trade name is not registerable but the law protects trade names under the laws of "unfair competition."
