What Kind of Lawn Do You Like?
Here Are Some Suggestions
You'll never convince a man who loves his lawn that there is any substitute for a good carpet of green. And there really isn't.
The well-groomed lawn is more elegant underfoot, more soothing to the eye, and more tolerant of traffic than any ground cover yet invented. But even the dedicated greenskeeper will admit that there are times and places to use a lawn substitute.
If you are plain unwilling to care for a lawn then by all means plant a substitute—or hire a gardener.
If you have an area too large for lawn, then try part lawn hire a gardener.
If you have a sloping area that is hard to keep watered, a parking strip that's a problem to mow, plant a substitute. You'll usually be ahead of the game.
The first essential to planting either a lawn or its stand-in is a good seedbed or planting bed. The ground should be well worked over and for seed it should be raked smooth and free of clods. Ground covers may be planted with less preparation; but thorough cultivation will assure a faster start in life.
The single most important step to establishing a fine carpet of grass is to work humus galore into the planting area. Peat moss and steer manure

Wear is being trained driving the Army's medical tank and in firing the .30 A .50 caliber machineguns at the 90 millimeter tank gun.
If you rent a power tiller, sure to use it for working humus before returning it. On the bed is prepared, cons your nurseryman about the serious lawn seed mixes. Once the lawn is planted, sure it never dries out while is getting started. A top layer of peat or manure helps to serve moisture.

One call from you and he's on the job
It's late at night and the one thing you need most in this world is a prescription filled for someone you love. You make a phone call and a friend answers—your druggist. Within minutes after your call, he's on the job.
It takes a time like this to make you realize how much you depend on this man, yet how much you take him for granted. Your pharmacist means medicine when you need it—skillfully prepared. He means service—regardless of time. His concern is for you, not only as a customer, but as a friend.
And what a valuable "extra" for you if your neighborhood drug store gives you S&H Green Stamps. You know, of course, to day half the families in America save them.
Your S&H Green Stamps make it possible for you to choose from over 1,500 top-quality, famous brand-name items at your S&H Green Stamp Redemption Store.

YOUR LEGISLATOR AT WORK
SEN. JOHN A. MURDY, JR.
State Senator
California's book burning disclosure has shocked the state's
citizenry into another "do something" attitude.
Seems like education this
year will go down in history as
one of the most talked about
subjects in the California Legislature.
The latest shocker on book
burning, however, wasn't so
much of a surprise to those
who knew their state laws.
The State Legislature, in the
same year the U.S. entered
World War I (1917), adopted a
section in the political code for
the disposal of obsolete books.
In 1945 the section was transferred to the education code,
then amended and reworded as late as 1959.

In 1945 the section was transferred to the education code, then amended and reworded as late as 1959.
What actually happened was this:
Some 184,000 books were actually burned. Since 1941 about 1,234,000 obsolete books have been disposed of, 148,000 burned, the remainder sold for pulp.
During the same period, 92.4 million books were distributed to the schools in California by the Department of Education.
The department resorted to book burning after cost of tearing off the covers (pulp mills wouldn't accept books with covers) amounted to nearly as much as the return from the paper.
Storage became costly, too.
Another reason for disposing of the books is the attorney general's ruling that textbooks could not be sold or re-used after eight years without payment of further royalty fees.
Thus, it became a decision of the lesser of two expenditures.
The ire of the Legislature was, to say the least, bi-partisan. Several bills and resolutions were introduced on the subject. At this writing, both the Senate and Assembly have called for a full investigation. There won't be any more book burning and the surplus books may be put to good use in the near future.
There's talk of sending the books overseas. Washington is screening the books now. I'd say the Congo is ripe for some literary enlightenment right now, whether the books are obsolete by our standards or not. The Congo has some catching up to do.
There has been considerable mail on the subject of repealing the income tax. To set your mind at ease as to why we haven't done anything, the Assembly's Joint Resolution No. 21 has started the ball rolling who knew their state laws.

Its future is still doubtful but I must confess the attempt has the eye of everyone and we are watching it with a great deal of interest and fascination.
Water is getting scarce in Northern California. Rain this year is also below normal here and many of the big lakes are well below their normal water level.
The situation will be serious this summer if we don't get more rain. Fortunately the snow pack in the Sierras is such that there will be good runoff this spring.
Visitors to Sacramento this week included:
William Clay of Garden Grove, representative of the Pacific Telephone Co.; Adrian Kuyper, deputy county counsel, from Santa Ana; George Osborne of Fullerton, Orange County Flood Control District engineer; and Al Kock, Orange County road commissioner.
Adults with educational or vocational problems may now register for a special testing-counseling program at Orange Coast College on March 13 and March 16, according to Gerald Ellis, associate dean of adult education.
If you are a single person, you are required to file a State return if your net income is $1,500 or more. But if your gross income is $5,000 or more, you must file a return regardless of the amount of your net income.
If you are married, you are required to file a State return if your net income, plus the net income of your spouse, equals $3,000 or more. But if your gross income, plus the gross income of your spouse, totals $5,000 or more, you must file a return regardless of the amount of your net income.
Whether you are single or married depends upon your status on the last day of the taxable year. Beware of these two problem areas:
—An interlocutory decree of divorce does not return a person to a single status. That person must file as a married person until the final divorce decree is obtained.
—The marital status of a taxpayer or his spouse who has died during the taxable year is determined as the date of death.
Meteoric Health Insurance Rise
A report by the Chamber of Commerce of the United States characterizes the rise in the extent of voluntary health insurance coverage in the United States as "meteoric."
From 29 million persons protected the first day of 1945, nearly 128 million or 72.4 percent of the civilian population, had purchased some form of voluntary private health insurance by the end of 1959 and the number has increased since. is charming Ron Deardon...
