A4—Anaheim Gazette Anaheim, Thursday, Feb. 23, 1961 TO PLAT, 100, is all that 5-year-old Mary Beth Bavry would like to have as she watches her friends skip rope at school. Even small donations to the new Orange County Childrens Hospital Fund will help make Mary Beth's dream come through through surgical therapy, say members of the fund campaign committee. Construction of the hospital is planned for early next year. Headquarters of the fund campaign are at 1125 E. 17th St., Santa Ana, and the telephone number is KImberly 7-6501. MURDY, JR. State Senator The State Division of Highways received the lowdown last week on where Orange County and its coastal cities think the proposed Coast Freeway should be located. County Supervisor Claire Nelson, Road Commissioner Al Koch, Irvine Co. representative William Spurgeon, Mayor Jay Stoddard of Newport Beach, Huntington Beach City Councilman Jack Stewart, Assemblymen Richard T. Hanna and Bruce Sumner, as well as city engineers and other officials met with top highway men, including J. C. Womack, chief engineer, and Ed Telford of the Los Angeles office. We were all concerned about an established piece of freeway along Coast Highway between Highway 39 and the Santa Ana River. It has no place to go and would mean at some later date that connecting links would have to be built through the heart of Huntington Beach and Newport Beach. The other coastal communities have similar problems. To buy up rights-of-way and construct freeways through the heart of the communities would be extremely costly as well as detrimental to the cities. It appears everyone agrees the present coast highway will be retained but later improved to a four-lane divided highway to handle local town to town and summer beach traffic. It seems everyone also agrees that another freeway will be needed to handle through traffic and some of the beach congestion. And so the problem, and it's a big one, is where to put the Coast Freeway. The Orange County delegation proposed a route a few miles inland from the coast to bypass the highly commercialized and developed areas of the beach community. Mrs. Richard Burch of 1547 Chanticleer Rd., welcomed members of the Orange County Alumnae of Alpha Phi sorority in her homet this week, when they were addressed by Donald Reiman, English instructor at Fullerton Junior College. "How to Gain the Greatest Benefit from Your Reading" was the topic presented by Reiman. Next project of the sorority will be participation of the members in the Heart Sunday Drive, this Sunday, in their respective communities. Telford still wants to hang on to the shoreline routs. There will be more discussion sessions and meetings before a decision is made. I think we may have a chance to change the rout. Time will tell. There isn't any money for it now anyhow so it will be several years yet before construction begins. They have acquired some rights-of-way, however, and we want them to study our proposal before it's too late to change. Tom Howard of 9451 Catherine St., Garden Grove, a student at Rancho Alamitos High School, was in Sacramento last week representing the Orange Empire Council, Boy Scouts of America at the annual state-wide scouting report o the Governor. Nine-year-old Johnny Ellis of Placentia had the Legislature buzzin' with excitement when introduced as the 1961 California Easter Seal Boy. Gov. Brown participated in the Senate ceremonies that I sponsored for Johnny. Dick Hanna and Bruce Sumner introduced the lad in the Assembly. We passed a resolution designating Easter Seal month from March 2 to April 2. Johnny is a regular visitor to the Orange County Society for Crippled Children and Adults. Wins Over Coach Firm The California Public Utilities Commission has dismissed a complaint by Airport Coach Service against the Yellow Cab Company of Northern Orange County. Social Security Financing Told In New Leaflet A new leaflet describing social security financial operations during fiscal year 1960 is now available at the social security district office in Santa Ana, Ralph A. Dillman, district manager, announced this week. Entitled "Facts About the Old-Age and Survivors Insurance Trust Fund and the Disability Insurance Trust Fund," the leaflet notes that as of the end of last June the total assets of the Old-Age and Survivors Insurance Trust Fund stood at $20.8 billion. On the same date, the assets of the Disability Insurance Trust Fund, which was set up in 1957 to finance payments to disabled workers, were $2.1 billion. Also included in the new leaflet is information on how social security insurance benefits are financed. “This new leaflet may clear up some misunderstandings about the nature of the social security trust funds and how they are invested,” Dillman said.
