Anaheim Gazette—B3 Anaheim, Thursday, Feb. 23, 1961 Charm School Leader Gives Apparel Tips Members of the Anaheim Business and Professional Women's Club at a recent dinner meeting in the Chungking Restaurant were given tips on "apparel to fit the figure and occasion" by Mrs. June Jones of the Loretta Young Way Charm School, Long Beach. The program for the meeting was arranged by Mrs. Eleanor Barthelmes. She introduced Mrs. Robert Chase and six of her music students who entertained with steel guitar and accordion music. An article in the state B-PW magazine commending the Anaheim club for instituting the National Convention Hospitality Fund, which will be used in 1962, and for the furtherance of a California member. was arranged by Mrs. Eleanor Barthelmes. She introduced Mrs. Robert Chase and six of her music students who entertained with steel guitar and accordion music. An article in the state B-PW magazine commending the Anaheim club for instituting the National Convention Hospitality Fund, which will be used in 1962, and for the furtherance of a California member, Mrs. Dorothy Ford of Los Angeles, for the presidency of the national organization was read. Special guests included Mrs. Joe Hurst, Linda Easley, Mrs. Hazel Kochendorfer of Minnesota and Mrs. Evah Drennon of Illinois, the latter a former Anaheim resident. Mrs. Ruby, club president, presided. Students Plan Memorial to Howard C. Hall A fund for a memorial to the late Howard C. Hall, Fullerton Junior College instructor and a former editor of The Gazette, has been set up by his former journalism and publications students. Plans call for a commemorative plaque near a tree to be planted in Mr. Hall's honor near the journalism room of the classroom building scheduled for completion in 1962. The group is seeking college approval. A Howard C. Hall Journalist-of-the-Year Award each year is also planned. Funds received are being deposited in a Fullerton savings association account. Contributions may be sent to the college. Mr. Hall began his teaching career at the college in 1954. He was responsible for the production of four student publications. County’s Early History Will Be Preserved by Revived Society Reactivation of the old Orange County Historical Society has been completed by two groups that combined to promote the preservation of early history, continue the placing of historic markers, and perpetuate the colorful past of the Santa Ana Valley. Next meeting has been set for Thursday, March 16, at the Charles W. Bowers Memorial Museum in Santa Ana. This was the meeting place of the original society, which was founded in 1918 and flourished until travel restrictions during World War II caused it to go inactive. Temporary chairman of the new group is E. M. Sundquist, Santa Ana insurance executive, who was secretary-treasurer of the original group. Vacancies on the old board of trustees will be filled and a long-range program outlined. Another meeting has been scheduled for April 18, also at the museum. It was coincidental that two groups should start the reactivation move, unknown to the other. Sundquist and a county-wide group gathered available records and called a meeting at the museum on February 7. Ted Parker of Laguna Beach and Ted Oliver of New York Beach, both associated with Orange County Title Co., sent invitations for a February 14 meeting. When the duplication was discovered, the later meet was cancelled and both groups joined. Others in the formation group were Edward P. Bailey Placentia; Dr. LeRoy DeGarden Grove; Roy Edward Orange; Albert Launer, La Bra; Charles Swanner, Sa Ana; Leo Friis, Anaheim; Jo (Sky) Dunlap, Santa Ana; Harry Rowe, Fullerton librarian; Merton Hinshaw, museum director; W. K. Hillyard, president of the museum trustee; W. H. Spurgeon Jr., son of Santa Ana's founder. Attorney Friis said stealth have been taken to regain legal status with the Staunton which had lapsed during the years of inactivity. He said many prominent Orange County residents had held membership in the Society since founding four decades ago. Jet Age Record-Breaker This year millions of vacationers flew by jetliner to the major cities of every continent. Jetting along at 575 mph is so easy, convenient, and comfortable that travelers may be unaware of the years of airline planning and the vast experience of jet pilots. Very often they remain anonymous, since relatively few passengers get to meet them. Captain André Lesieur's career is highlighted by the jet speed record he established December 3, 1960, when he flew an Air France 707 Intercontinental 3,612 miles between New York and Paris in just 5 hours 37 minutes. Usually such a flight takes seven hours. The personal profile of Captain Lesieur reveals that he was born September 23, 1919 at Bernay in Normandy, France. He and his wife live in Neuilly, near Paris. When not pursuing his career, water-skiing is his favorite recreation about which he has written in various French sports publications. The many aviation achievements of Captain Lesieur accent the skills developed since he became a French Air Force pilot in 1940. He holds the Legion of Honor and the Croix de Guerre with four citations. After completing military service in 1945, he was granted a navigation license, and the following year, when he joined the French airline, he earned a commercial pilot’s license. Captain Lesieur was certified to fly jets as early as 1953, and later that year he set a speed record of 2 hours and 38 minutes between Paris and Casablanca in a four-engine jet. In April 1956, he was assigned to Air France’s Caravelle jet program, and in 12 months logged 400 hours on this craft. By December 1960, Captain Lesieur had made 315 transatlantic crossings and had flown 707 jetliners over 750 hours. Such is the distinguished image of a jet age record-breaker. DISCOUNTS? A place that has no glare, tinsel, or polish, and the only reason for its existence is to cater to people who still enjoy the art of good eating, where the food is rich, heavy, and full flavored, and every dinner is an 8-course feast, complete from beginning to end, in a typical Italian style. Such a place you'll find at De Palma's Little Italy, 810 E. Willow, Signal Hill. Remember, that to take time to eat is so take time to live. ON THE GO with DORIS Had dinner Saturday eve at the unique new Restaurant BALI in Long Beach. This was the first time that I had ever had the pleasure of trying Indonesian food, and I do mean pleasure. It was a delightful experience. So-o-o different and good. We tried the combination dinner with chicken, shrimp, Balinese肉 balls, vegetables, rice, salad with peanut dressing, a soup without liquid, etc... A delectable dinner that I would recommend to all of you who enjoy the different cuisines. You will be served by two cute gals actually from Indonesia (dressed in their colorful native sarongs), who will narrate your food (so you will know what you're biting into). The chef is from Indonesia too... Luncheon at Restaurant BALI is quaint also, with their Dutch delights. Here in the Holland Room you will be expertly served by girls in the dress of their native Holland. Your charming hostess is, of course, Agnes, native of Holland, but living six years in Indonesia. I heard a tremendous group the other evening in Belmont Shore at THE HAT on East 2nd Street... This trio with songstress MELBA REMME, a gal (an attractive silver blond) who really belts out a number. This group can play dance, novelty, jazz, anything you want... The pianist is great, with sax, clarinet and flute too. The drummer is sensational too. Even though he has a beautiful set of drums, cymbals, etc., he could probably get a good sound out of a washtub. He also plays the vibes... The bass player is fine and has a fine voice... He can really sing "Old Man River." If you are over that way in Belmont Shore, stop in... This is a limited engagement and I predict big things for this group.
