IT IS A PRIVILEGE TO OWN YOUR OWN HOME—AND YOUR AMERICAN RIGHT! B2—Anaheim Gazette Anaheim, Thursday, Feb. 23, 1961 STATE WILL ASK CAL-VET HOME OWNERS TO CHECK FIRE POLICIES Veterans and their families in homes under Cal-Vet contract will be advised to take a good look at the fire insurance protection they now have to determine whether the coverage is high enough to match the present value of their property, State Director of Veterans Affairs Joseph M. Farber announced this week. All contract-holders will receive this advice with their monthly statements for March, Farber said. "In particular we are worried about homes and farms with insurance values determined several years ago," he added. "The appreciation of most California real estate and improvements has been substantial in the past several years, and a property insured for $12,000 or $13,000 in 1953, for lightning and perils of extended coverage. Veterans obtaining Cal-Vet loans are required to insure in an amount equal to the approximate cost of replacement. The department pays the insurance premium directly to the company and charges the amount to the purchaser's account. Contract-holders who want to increase the amount of coverage, to bring it in line with increased market value of their property, will be advised to contact their Cal-Vet loan district office or the insurance broker with whom they drew up the original fire insurance policy, Farber said. The form to be filled out is T-99, "Request for Additional Insurance." "The appreciation of most California real estate and improvements has been substantial in the past several years, and a property insured for $12,000 or $13,000 in 1953, for example, may be worth several thousand more than that today." In other words, we are concerned with the insurance 'lag' that exists for many of our Cal-Vet homes, and we are calling it to veterans' attention so they may consider increasing their property protection. Low-cost fire insurance is available through hte Department of Veterans Affairs, under agreement with an insurance company, for a five-year term. The coverage is for "all physical loss" on dwellings and garages, and other farm buildings are insured against fire, Rose Is Still Favorite of Southlanders No flower in history has inspired man's expression in music and poetry in more abundance than has the rose. The rose is a great favorite of Southern Californians. Climbing roses, for instance, aided by stout cords, will turn a lamp or mailbox post into a pillar of colorful blooms. Or they will add a blaze of beauty to your lawn when planted along wire fences or under fan-shaped trellises. Besides its beauty, the rose bush can be used to hide an unseemly spot in your garden. It also has an acoustical value in softening street noises. John Grenik has been named chairman of the Anaheim Board of Realtors Anti-Communist Committee. Other committee members are Musa McKay, Sully Roquet, JoAnne Naughton, Louis Disinger and Don Roth. GARDNER'S CHECKLIST FOR FEBRUARY 23 TO MARCH 1 Prepared by the California Association of Nurserymen 1. Start thinking about a new lawn. It's not too early to work up a seedbed for planting next month. 2. Plant annuals for spring and summer color. The more the merrier. 3. Plant Roses while they are still available in bare-root stock. 4. Start a hedge this month. The longer you wait, the less growth you'll get during this first year. 5. Many shrubs are now abloom. Daphne, deciduous Magnolias, Quinces, Camellias are just a few of those you will find. IF YOU'RE PLANTING FRUIT TREES HERE'S SOME ADVICE Success in growing fruit trees in the garden depends on two things: whether the variety you plant is suited to your area and whether its particular cultural needs will be met by you. Of the two, the former is probably more important. Strange as it may seem, and despite annual warnings from the California Association of Nurserymen, gardeners persist in planting fruit varieties that are not adapted to the climate in which they live. Or perhaps it's not so strange when you consider that California has so many different climates in which to live. Before you plant any fruit tree—whether peach, pear, or whatever—check with your nursery as to variety. If you have plenty of space and are willing to take less than the potential crop, you can plant a favorite variety even if it is marginal; but when space is limited, you want the most for your money. As to cultural demands, there are fruit trees which have few, if any, and others which require some care in pruning or spraying. These latter are worth the extra care, however. We know of no one who stops at planting peach trees simply because he has to spray them annually to get a better crop. Announcement of the local winners will be made about March 20. For "outstanding scholarship, leadership and promise of future service to society," more than 2,500 Southern California students will receive certificates of achievement; 800 will receive engraved trophies, and 252 who survive group oral interviews in competition with other schools will receive cash awards. In Southern California there will be 12 awards of $1,000 each, and others ranging down to a large group of $25 awards. Zone competitions with other schools will be held in April, and all first-place winners in the zone events will go to the finals in May, where they will receive cash awards ranging from $150 to $1,000 each. "We're running out of prefix names faster than anticipated," the company reported. "And we need more usable combinations on the dial than the dwindling supply of two-letter prefixes can provide." Under the new All-Number Calling plan—ANC, for short—figures will replace letters in phone numbers and prefix names will disappear. The switch to ANC will open up more calling combinations and provide enough numbers to take care of future growth in the nation's telephone system, the company said. Growth in the number of telephones and in the expansion of Direct Distance Dialing (DDD), the system that lets telephone users dial their own long distance calls, was reported. Emphasizing the rate of growth the company said the nation now has better than 70,-000,000 telephones, and may top the 140,000,000 mark by 1975.
