TV Math Course Offered by SAC
Santa Ana College will offer a second course by television for the spring semester. Probability and Statistick, starting January 30, it was announced this week.
The nationally televised mathematics course will be offered under the sponsorship of Continental Classroom. Santa Ana College is the only participating college in Orange County and joins more than 300 colleges and universities in cooperation with 170 television stations.
The class will be offered from 6:30 to 7 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday over KRCA-TV, Channel 4. Then the students come to the campus from 7 to 10 p.m. Thursday for discussion, review and examination by Mathematics Instructor H. Jay Davis. The course carries three units of college credit.
Davis is just finishing the pilot course in Modern Algebra, which started last September.
The course will be taught by Professor Frederick Mosteller, chairman of the Department of Statistics at Harvard University, and Professor Paul C. Clifford, mathematics instructor at Montclair (N.J.) State College.

Registration will be conducted as for any other SAC college credit course, with the admissions office open weekdays from 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. A week of evening registration to accommodate day workers will be held January 23-26 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. There is no tuition charge.
The course calls for a prerequisite of a second course in high school algebra, or the Modern Algebra course offered during the fall semester at SAC.
It will including counting problems, probability theory in finite sample spaces, random numbers and their uses, random variables, expectations, means, variances, binomial and normal distributions, random walk problem point estimation, confidence limits, hypothesis testing, applications of Bayes' theorem, sums of independent random variables, law of large numbers and central limit theorem.
Davis is just finishing the pilot course in Modern Algebra, which started last September.
The course will be taught by Professor Frederick Mosteller, chairman of the Department of Statistics at Harvard University, and Professor Paul C. Clifford, mathematics instructor at Montclair (N.J.) State College.
Doctor Mosteller taught at Carnegie Institute of Technology and Princeton before joining the Harvard faculty, while Professor Clifford has lectured in statistics at New York University, Newark College of Engineering, Rutgers University and University of Michigan.
SAC Instructor Davis was a lecturer at Long Beach State College and Pomona College before coming to Santa Ana.

Under the series title of "The Well Adjusted Personality," the next of a group of lectures sponsored by Fullerton Junior Evening College and Parent-Teacher organizations will be given at 7:30 Monday evening in the Nicholas School auditorium, 3441 Valencia Dr., Fullerton.
Dr. Arthur L. Bietz, who is presenting the series, said the Monday evening topic will be "Thinking Big."
One more lecture in the current series will be presented on January 30.
Doctor Bietz is a professor at the College of Medical Evangelists and a widely known lecturer on psychology, mental hygiene and family relations.
Hughes Unit Wins Army Certificate
Hughes Aircraft Company's ground systems group in Fullerton has been awarded an inspection and quality control certificate by the U.S. Army Signal Supply Agency, it was announced this week.

Early implementation of the first phase of the Irvine Ranch master-plan which will eventually transform the 98,000-acre Orange County property into a community of more than 250,000 people was planned this week with the announcement that Coldwell Banker & Co. had been named exclusive agents for development of the 175-acre Irvine Center project.
Charles S. Thomas, Irvine Company president, stated that the real estate firm, identified with several Orange County shopping centers, would handle leases for the mile-long shopping esplanade planned along the Coast Highway between Jamboree and Mae Artur Blvd., and the complex of office buildings and major scores immediately to the north.
Altogether some 2,000,000 square feet of commercial floor space may be involved in this first project, according to the master concept prepared by William L. Perelra & Associates.
