88 Lawmen Take Orange County Course Eighty-eight investigators from 24 California law enforcement agencies have completed eight hours of instruction in footwear identification during a course conducted by the Orange County Sheriff's Department, Sheriff James Musick announced this week. Chairman of the session was Captain Robert Luxembourger, head of the department's Bureau of Records and Identification. Topics covered included classes of imprints, foreign bodies adhering to footwear, the test impression or exemplar continuity of evidence, grid-plate technique of identification, the examination of interior surfaces of footwear, comparison with suspect's feet, packaging and preparing exhibits for court, and court room techniques and hints. Instruction was headed by J. R. "Reg" Abbott, retired sergeant specialist of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Cadet Exams Are Announced By Coast Guard Annual examinations for appointment as a cadet in the United States Coast Guard Academy at New London, Conn., will be held February 20 and 21, it was announced this week. Candidates who pass the examination—the only means of entering the academy—and who are physically and morally qualified will be offered an appointment for the class of 1965, which will convene in July. The academy's curriculum is a four-year accredited college course leading to a bachelor of science degree and a commission in the Coast Guard. Applications for the test must be postmarked not later than January 10. State's '60 Deer Bag Was 75,584 California deer hunters bagged 75,584 bucks during the year, the State Department of Fish and Game announced this week. The count does not include deer taken in special antlerless or either-sex hunts, the tabulation of which will be completed in mid-January. The 1960 buck harvest was the second best season in state history, being just 18 less than 1954's all-time record of 75,602.
