Beckman Obtains $300,000 Fleet Analyzer Contract
Beckman Instruments, Inc., today announced receipt of a $300,000 Navy contract for 12 Mark IV atmosphere analyzers for the United States nuclear submarine fleet.
Max D. Liston, director of the company's Special Projects Division, said the contract brings to 21 the number of Mark IVs Beckman will build for the Navy.
Liston said an earlier version of the electronic instrument, the Mark III, is standard equipment aboard all U.S. nuclear subs. He said installation of the Mark IV on craft now under construction will begin in September 1961.
The analyzer, Liston said,
Root Health
We hear a good deal about root health and root die-back these days. Some of our smart growers have begun to find out about root health.
For example, Rodney Leonard of Santa Ana became satisfied with the health of his trees a couple of years ago. He felt the trees showed too much twig die-back and general lack of thrift.
By digging some holes he learned that repeated irrigations with a little too much water had caused roots below 18 inches to become in active and even die in some cases. He wisely decided to put in some tensiometers and begin irrigation based on information.
The tensiometers told him to use a little less water each irrigation. Readings of instruments installed at 2-foot depth did not climb much at first. This indicated that the roots

The analyzer, Liston said, monitors air supplies to prevent dangerous concentrations of impurities and guarantees safe oxygen content, a vital function in confined areas where the same air is reused over long periods of time.
He said the Mark IV, which operates entirely electronically without moving parts, monitors for oxygen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, freon and six security-classified gases.
Gardener's Check List
By the California Association of Nurserymen
1. If you want an exotic touch in the window this winter, try a potted orchid. When you select one, make sure it will bloom during the winter months. Your nurseryman will know.
2. Plant the large hybrid Lilies as soon as you get them home from the nursery. They never really go dormant and cannot be stored like other bulbs.
3. Ranunculus can be planted right through the first part of next year for a long succession of blooms in spring.
4. Plant annuals for winter and spring color; perennials for spring and summer.

Stewart W. Yost Elected New Fairs Chairman
At a recent meeting held at the Orange County Fairgrounds, the southern area fairs of Western Fairs Association elected Stewart W. Yost, secretary-manager of the Orange County Fair, as their new area chairman for a two-year term.
The meeting, held in the Agricultural Building, was attended by southern area fair managers, directors and wives and was followed with a buffet dinner. Hawaiian entertainment was provided by Hawaiian Abe, well known entertainer of Anaheim.
Southern area fairs include Los Angeles County Fair, National Orange Show, San Bernardino County Fair, Riverside Dry Time Again!
Tensiometer users complain that their instruments tell them to irrigate oftener at this time of year than they had thought necessary. If this is so, maybe we'd better think about:
1. Fall irrigation needs following a dry winter may be a lot different than following a wet winter. (Wouldn't it be nice to have a wet winter, so we could find out?)
2. Could these dry stretches in the fall be responsible for twig die-back?
3. 30% of fruit growth is made between Sept. 1 and Dec. 1. What effect do dry periods have on ultimate fruit sizes?
1957, succeeds Oren Robertson, secretary-manager of the San Bernardino County Fair at Victorville.
Attending the meeting from the Orange County Fair were Irvin C. Chapman, board president: A. F. "Pat" Arnold.

Boasting about your home, Higgins? Well, that's understandable. Most men who have worked hard through the years to buy good homes for their families are proud of them.
Nice as your home is, its location in a progressive community, with all the public facilities needed for modern living, adds greatly to its attractiveness.
Someday—perhaps years from now—you may sell your home. When you do, the good schools, well-equipped fire department, modern hospitals, ample supply of pure water and other community assets can make a difference of several thousand dollars cash in your pocket.
Of course, you share the cost of these community assets. But the cost is spread over a long period of time to keep taxes at a reasonable rate. This is done by sale of municipal bonds on a competitive bid basis.
