Miss Pat Cowee, a senior student at Anaheim High School arr a member of the "Y-Dolls Tri-Hi Y," accompanied Mrs. Moore and represented the local association at the world gathering. Reporting to the YMCA board of directors recently, Mrs. Moore rated the summer's work as one of lasting value, pointing out that almost 800 teen-agers from 49 countries participated in serious discussions on questions that have a practical application to the tasks of world leadership, so soon to be the responsibility of today's youth. The pooling of many cross-cultural ideas, learning to know young people from different backgrounds, making the transition from the feel- leader of the American delegation. A tribute to the fine leadership of these young people, said Mrs. Moore, was the way in which they were able to take 215 American and Canadian youth, from almost every one of our 50 states plus Canadian provinces, and create such a strong group feeling that the delegates finished their nine-day Atlantic crossing on the Arkadia Student Ship with the spirit of real crusaders, determined to take the very finest picture of American Youth to the world as represented at the conference. The 14 conference days were spent at the Dutch Navy Base at Hilversum, near Amsterdam, where no woman had entered until the pretty YMCA co-eds descended upon the base. Life in a Navy barracks, with no heat in the midst of 11 straight days of rain, no warm water, and the feminine delegation of 162 girls from all over the world housed under one roof presented some lessons in adjustments. New Building to House Piano Firm Schmidt-Phillips Co., in business since 1914 and at their present location for 22 years, are moving to their new store which was built especially for them at 1907 N. Main St., Santa Ana. The main floor will be used exclusively for the display and sale of instruments with two large organ display rooms with a large room in the rear for used organs and pianos. One of the most important new features of the new location, and one of the deciding factors for the move was, of course, the spacious free parking area adjacent to the store and so necessary for any business today. An opening day is planned for the near future. Salzberg, Oberammergau with the Passion Play, a visit to the International Forum at Berg Leibenzell in the northern Black Forest, a trip through the Austrian Alps with a view of the Glossglockner Glacier, Lake Geneve in Switzerland, a ride on the gondolas in Venice and the excitement of the Olympics at Rome provided our American young people with a summer of excellent in- teen-agers from 49 countries participated in serious discussions on questions that have a practical application to the tasks of world leadership, so soon to be the responsibility of today's youth. The pooling of many cross-cultural ideas, learning to know young people from different backgrounds, making the transition from the feelings one may have about nationalities, to the warmer feelings that come from knowing individual persons from that nation, struggling to come to common agreements from widely separated points of view, experiencing the frustration of settling for a middle-of-the-road decision, these and other face-to-face encounters provided a learning situation in the hard core of give and take that has become imperative in a world that has suddenly become a neighborhood. Miss Diane Howell of Modesto was honored when she was chosen as one of three vice-presidents for the World Conference, and Bill Brown of New York City was chosen as at Hilversum, near Amsterdam, where no woman had entered until the pretty YMCA co-eds descended upon the base. Life in a Navy barracks, with no heat in the midst of 11 straight days of rain, no warm water, and the feminine delegation of 162 girls from all over the world housed under one roof presented some lessons in adjustments. Just the simple problem of 162 wet coats, and an equal number of shoes, towels and other personal articles that must be washed was enough to put the young dispositions to a test. Yet Mrs. Moore indicated a highly enthusiastic spirit, wonderful cooperation among the delegates, and a seriousness of purpose which was reflected in the European news coverage under that caption of "Teen-Age Summit Meetings." Both before and after the conference the young people toured central Europe with stops at Paris, Brussels, Cologne, a trip down the Rhine River by boat, a visit to Heidelberg with its centuries old castle and traditions, Munich, Salzberg, Oberammergau with the Passion Play, a visit to the International Forum at Berg Leibenzell in the northern Black Forest, a trip through the Austrian Alps with a view of the Glossglockner Glacier, Lake Geneve in Switzerland, a ride on the gondolas in Venice and the excitement of the Olympics at Rome provided our American young people with a summer of excellent international relations in the important face-to-face fashion. The return trip on the Italian student ship Ascania held an added excitement when the hurricane Donna paid them a visit two days out of New York. There were 13 young Californians among the delegation, and each returned with a commitment to share the insights and experiences of the summer with other youth in their area, so that the impact of the World Youth Conference might be felt by a larger body of young leaders. "If you believe that peace will come in the world when understanding comes in the hearts of men," said Mrs. Moore, "then you will have to believe that the YMCA made a practical contribution to world peace through the World Youth Conference this summer." but Daddy said the TRUST DEPARTMENT at the Friendly Bank has complete Trust Services WAY FOR FREIGHT average of 725 freight trains roll over Southern Pacific's network in 11 Western and Southwestern states.
