Casey-Beckham Displays Models New Bodies, Frames, System Of Suspension in '61 Pontiacs Entirely new bodies with increased passenger space, a new perimeter type frame, more efficient front and rear suspension systems, and a lighter but higher performing "Trophy" V-8 engine head a significant list of completely new engineering features in the 1961 Pontiac. Fifteen new wide-track models in four series on view at Casey-Beckham Pontiac showrooms, reflect new standards in interior and exterior design, riding comfort, handling, safety, efficiency and overall performance, according to Fred Beckham. Pontiac's lower priced Catalina series is available in seven different body styles including two-and four-door sedans, two- and four-door hardtops, four-door six- and nine-passenger station wagons, and a convertible. Ventura models include two- and four-door hardtops. A four-door sedan and four-door hardtop comprise the Star Chief series. The top-of-the-line Bonneville series offers two- and four-door hardtops, a four-door six-passenger station wagon, and a convertible. Bodies Roomier 'The 1961 Pontiac is as much as 9 inches lower than the 1960 model.' Ventura models include two-and four-door hardtops. A four-door sedan and four-door hardtop comprise the Star Chief series. The top-of-the-line Bonneville series offers two- and four-door hardtops, a four-door six-passenger station wagon, and a convertible. Bodies Roomier 'The 1961 Pontiac is as much as .9 inch lower, four inches shorter, and 2.5 inches narrower. Overall length of Catalina and Ventura sedan, hardtop and convertible models is 210 inches with Star Chiefs and Bonnevilles measuring 217 inches. All Safaris measure 209.7 inches. Overall height ranges from 54.9 inches with convertible models to 56.9 inches with station wagons. All body styles have a maximum overall width of 78.2 inches. Although 1961 Pontiac bodies are smaller, important interior dimensions have been improved to provide increased driver and passenger comfort. Head room is up to two inches greater and seat height has been moved upward 2.3 inches on most models for better leg support and a more natural, relaxed sitting position. Considerable engineering detail also has been focused on greater ease of entrance and exit. Front seat to steering wheel clearance is extended 12 per cent and the Former AHS Athlete Coach at Chapman LeRoy Stevens, one of Chapman College's all-time great basketball players, has been named coach of the Chapman Frosh cage team, according to Don Perkins, director of athletics. Stevens, who earned honors at Anaheim High School and Orange Coast College before matriculating at Chapman, was captain of the 1959-60 Panther team which won the Pacific Coast NCAA College Basketball Championship and finished second in the national playoffs last March in Indiana. He was a starting guard for the Vet Pensioners Must Report Income Changes Changes in annual rates of income, that would serve to make a person on veteran pension ineligible to continue receiving pension, must be reported promptly to the Veterans Administration. The point was emphasized today by Veterans Service Officer Ben Liebermann who said the importance of such reports applies to pensioners under either the old or the new pension systems. Under the former system, the income limitations were—and still are if the pensioner chose to remain under the old system—$1,400 annually for single persons and $2,700 for pensioners with dependents. Under the new system, effective last July 1, these limits were raised to $1,800 and $3,000 respectively, with pension payments realigned accordingly based on need. If the pensioner anticipates that his income by the end of the calendar year will have exceeded the annual limitation—whichever applies in his case, he should no Stevens, who earned honors at Anaheim High School and Orange Coast College before matriculating at Chapman, was captain of the 1959-60 Panther team which won the Pacific Coast NCAA College Basketball Championship and finished second in the national playoffs last March in Indiana. He was a starting guard for three Chapman teams, two of which won the Pacific Coast title. In his senior year he was awarded the Orange Elks sportsmanship award, the Redlands Invitational sportsmanship award, the coveted Chapman College coaches' award, and was named to the all-star teams at both the Redlands Tournament and the NCAA Pacific Coast College Tournament. Stevens was on Orange Coast College's championship team of 1957 and was named All-Eastern Conference. He was named All-Sunset League and "most valuable player" while at Anaheim High. Doubling Up Must a new face mean more space. The answer is not necessarily. A long, hard look at your present living space with an eye toward doubling up the use of certain rooms may show you how to provide an extra bedroom for your new arrival without building an addition to your home. When you survey your house, notice particularly whether or not your wall and ceiling material is hardy enough for the additional use you plan. If it is stucco, for instance, you need not worry about the hardest wear. Possible Pension Eligibility of Widowers, Orphans Stressed By Service Officer Veterans Service Officer Ben Beermann said today he believes there may be many widows and orphans of veterans in this area who are eligible now for pensions it do not realize it. For the past several months the Veterans Service Officer has envoyed to contact veterans' widows and orphans whose pension claims were previously disallowed, advising them that the New Pension Act which took effect last July 1 might make them eligible. However, he points out, many eligibles" may have moved into is area who had no previous intact with his office, and it is ese persons with whom he is imarily concerned. Under the old pension system, had to be established that a deceased veteran of World War II or the Korean Conflict had a service-connected disability at the time of death. The new pension law eliminates this requirement. In addition, many widows and orphans of World War I, World War II and Korean Conflict veterans were previously ineligible because their annual incomes exceeded $1,400 for a widow or orphan alone, or $2,700 for a widow with a child. The new law has increased these limitations to $1,800 and $3,000 respectively. Another point to be emphasized, said the service officer, is that "war orphan" as defined by the Veterans Administration means generally the dependent child of a deceased veteran; the other parent may still be alive, but the Inspire Quality Economic booms, such as the one we're experiencing now, inspire quality homes; in fact, they practically demand them, the Stucco Manufacturers Association points out. In this kind of situation, it becomes more important than ever that the house you hope to mortgage represents a solid investment for the lender. Use of durable materials such as stucco on walls and ceilings is one sure way to impress a potential lender that your home will retain its value permanently. child qualifies as the "orphan" of a wartime veteran. There are many points of eligibility to be considered, the service officer noted, far too numerous to be detailed here. Every case must be individually evaluated, not only by the service officer but by the Veterans Administration. ABC-TV CASEY-BECKHAM 801 SOUTH LOS ANGELES State Tax Burden Soars to New High A break-through past the 100 dollar mark was staged for the first time by the per capita state tax burden in the year ended June 30, 1960, according to Commerce Clearing House, national reporting authority on tax and business law. With a whopping 13.7 per cent increase in state tax collections, every man, woman and child in the nation, on average, was hit with a state tax bill of $101.72, an all-time high surpassing last year's record by over $10, the CCH report said. State tax collections in fiscal 1960, taken from official census bureau figures, rose to over $18 billion, up more than $2 billion from the previous year. Not one state showed a decrease in total collections and only two states—Massachusetts and New Mexico—reflected a lower per capita tax burden. The CCH State Tax Review annual per capita tax map showed that the newest state, Hawaii, led the nation with a $200 per capita tax burden. California's tax collection soared over the $2 billion mark, the first time any state reached that peak. New York followed closely, $1.96 billion, and Pennsylvania topped the billion mark for the first time. The greatest percentage tax collection increase was registered by Arizona, up 27 per cent from last year. New Jersey and Nebraska had the lowest per capita marks, registering $60 and $65, respectively. The CCH report explained that the great variance between states was due in large part to the extent that local governments assumed responsibilities for finance.
