(Anaheim, Thursday, Oct. 6, 1960) Anaheim Gazette C-5 BEAUTY TREATMENT—Pretty Donna Heed of West Covina, Mt. San Antonio College coed, grooms her school's Hereford entry in the million dollar livestock show featured at 1960 Los Angeles County Fair at Pomona, Sept. 16-Oct. 2. IN THE DAYS OF LONG AGO From the Plies of The Anaheim Gazette By MRS. HENRY KUCHEL 63 YEARS AGO June 10, 1897 spoon, was won by Mrs. Cora Erdman. IN THE DAYS OF LONG AGO June 10, 1897 The following program for class day services will be held at 2 o'clock this afternoon at the Christian church: Song by the school. Composition, "Wealth," Bernard Snyder; "Character Sketch," Mable Middleham; vocal solo, Edith Fay; "The Man in the Moon," Daisy Seale; "Home Influence," Emelia Bacsk; "Nature as an Artist," Julia Nemetz; "Character Sektch," Effie McChesney; paper, Poldie Heimann; son, Edith Fay. The following program for the commencement exercises will be held in the opera house at 8 o'clock this evening: "Overture," Crowther's orchestra; invocation, Rev. J. C. Keith; solo, Dr. O. Lochman; lecture, Dr. J. S. Thompson, of Los Angeles; vocal solo, Prof. G. Abram Smith of Santa Ana; violin solo, J. W. Rice, Tustin; march, Crowther's orchestra. Following are the graduates: Adelle Strodthoff, Poldie Heimann, Mable Middleham, Emelia Backs, Effie McChesney, Daisy Seale, Julia Nemetz, hTeresa Bustamente, August Schumacher, George Wagner, Joe Barrett, Fred Rimpau, Welborn Wallop, Bernard Schneider. The graduating class of the Fullerton high school will have their commencement at Chadbourne's hall tomorrow evening. There are five graduates, viz.: Virginia Nicolas, Carrie Porter, Ada Montgomery, May Heeslip and DeWitt Montgomery. The Fullerton high school is regarded as being a model institute of learning. Capt. Halpin informs us he intends to sail from New York on July 3rd for the other side. He leaves here the preceding week. The captain goes to England to spoon, was won by Mrs. Cora Erd man. Ramon Agular and bride arrived from New Orleans last evening and will remain, visiting friends here for a few days. George Horr, who has been keeping books for the Fay Fruit company in Los Angeles for some months past, is home for the summer vacation. Tim Boege went down to San Diego Tuesday on a business trip. 63 YEARS AGO—1897 Chadbourne's hall was well filled with a fashionable audience on Saturday evening, the occasion being the concert of the Fullerton M.E. Church. Mrs. Katherine Fleming Hinricks, the noted singer, was the star, and the audience compelled her to sing no less than seven times. But the applause that greeted her singing was irresistible and there was no denying the audience an encore each time she appeared—they would have it, and the singer had to comply, which she did with consummate grace and her usual sweetness of disposition. Though Mrs. Hinricks' numbers included several ambitions selections — ambitions for singers of less ability than she — it is doubtful if among her seven songs any was sweeter or "Spring Has Come Again" and possessed of more melody than "Annie Laurie," two encores with which she graciously responded to the applause which followed each song. A large and appreciative audience gathered at the opera house on Tuesday evening to attend the recital and concert given by Mrs. A. Warmer Kucherl and his wife. Capt. Halpin informs us he intends to sail from New York on July 3rd for the other side. He leaves here the preceding week. The captain goes to England to enter her majesty's service in a movement against the Boers of South Africa. The Misses Zoila and Beatrice Smythe entertained the Young Ladies' Social Club last Saturday in their usual charming manner. The time was spent in playing euchre and at the conclusion of the game refreshments were served. The first prize, which was a handsome set of shirt waist buttons and cuff links, was won by Miss Helen Benchley, and the second, a silver hat pin, by Miss Fritzie Heimann. W. J. Hill is carrying on extensive heading operations on the La Habra ranch and expects to start threshing the latter part of the month. Bill is the father of a new son and heir, and was all smiles on Friday last when he came in to tell us about it. The Ladies' Euchre club met with Mrs. J. Schneider yesterday afternoon. Progressive euchre was the order of the afternoon and after the game refreshments were served. The first prize, a silver fish knife, was won by Mrs. F. Crist; the second, a sugar spoon, by Mrs. Polhemus. The consolation price, an after dinner coffee A large and appreciative audience gathered at the opera house on Tuesday evening to attend the recital and concert given by Mrs. A. Werner-Ruprecht and her pupils for the benefit of the Ladies' Aid society of the Presbyterian church. The playing of mandolin and guitar composed of Misses Jessie Melrose, Fanny Higgins, Zoila Smythe and Beatrice Smythe was a delightful feature of the program. A vocal duet by Misses Edith Fay and Estelle Lewis was sweetly sung and Miss Katie Brown's piano playing showed that she has made good progress in the art of mastering the piano-forte. The chorus from the cantata "Springtime" by Misses Lewis, Nicolas, Fay, Mrs. Warling and Mrs. Ruprecht was a delightful bit of music. Oscar Werner's violin solo proved him to be a violinist of merit. Miss Flora Davis was the accompanist of the evening. Richard Egan was the guest of Col. Northam at the latter gentleman's extensive possessions at Bolsa, the fore part of the week. The report is revived that the Santa Fe will in the near future build a branch road from Newport to Bolsa. Miss Kate Champlin presided at the water office yesterday in the absence of Capt. Blennerhassett, who went to Los Angeles. ACCENT ON GRACIOUSNESS Many of the nation's leading architects and home buildings are emphasizing gracious living in moderately priced homes, says the Hardwood Flooring Council of Southern California. While space is still provided for informality, there is a definite trend to a more formal mode of living Obituaries BACKS—Clementine A., of 845 N.
