Freezers Are Convenience but Not an Economy
There are many good reasons for buying a freezer, but economy is seldom one of them, says Marian Prentiss, Home Advisor with the University of California Agricultural Extension Service. A few homemakers make their freezers pay for themselves. Especially for those families who produce some of their own food perhaps this is true. But most users find that it costs more to eat with a freezer than without one, even though a freezer lets you take advantage of seasonal sales on foods. The big contribution to most homes is convenience.
Freezers and frozen foods are here to stay. Whether the freezer pays for itself may be of little concern to some, of great interest to others.
Keep in mind that a freezer is a convenience. It is a convenience in shopping; you can stock up on items your family likes when you see a bargain.
Steaks, for example, are in great demand during barbecue season. During the cold months of the year, steaks fall in prices because we are all more interested in doing roasts. When the demand and prices are down on steaks, that is the time some homemakers put in their supply. Right now
