Sumner Reports On Progress of OC University On July 22 of this year the regents of the University of California accepted a gift from The Irvine Company of 1,000 acres of land located at the upper end of Newport Bay. This land is to be the site of a new branch of the University of California, reports Assemblyman Bruce Sumner. Although we in this area have grown used to impressive changes there is really no parallel in the history of the world for this significant event. No where has it ever before been possible to plan a major university from bare undeveloped land. Here we can utilize all the advantages that go with full scale planning, unhindered by existing highways or structures. The University of California is one of the greatest universities in the world, and the Orange County branch will be the largest-bigger than either UCLA or Berkeley. Under this agreement between the regents and The Irvine Company the University will have the option of either purchasing an additional 660 acres or controlling the leasing of this area, planned for faculty and student housing. It was further agreed that the University and The Irvine Company would jointly plan the development of the surrounding area of approximately 10,000 acres. "The full significance of this whole development is staggering," said Sumner. "I am convinced that it will be one of the most significant events to occur in Orange County during this century, and am proud to have had a part in bringing the University to our county." Platform Speaking Course Set at FJC A much needed course in Microphone and Platform Speaking for Executives, condensed and streamlined for today's busy member of management and continuing for a brief nine-week period instead of the regular school semester, will be offered again this fall by Fullerton Junior College, according to John N. Reid, director of adult education. "The steady increase in the influx of executives from all parts of the United States to Orange County has resulted in a corresponding increase in the number of requests for this type of training," Reid said. "The main request we receive," he opined out, "is from executives who would like to know in a comparatively short time how to reduce self-consciousness, and to acquire and use principles of showmanship and salesmanship that are compatible with this rapidly changing dramatic age. "This course is the answer to these requests," he went on. "It emphasizes extemporaneous speaking techniques in a new, interesting, informal and practical manner and is designed to make..." like to know in a comparatively short time how to reduce selw consciousness, and to acquire and use principles of showmanship and salesmanship that are compatible with this rapidly changing dramatic age. “This course is the answer to these requests,” he went on. “It emphasizes extemporaneous speaking techniques in a new, interesting, informal and practical manner and is designed to make it possible for the progressive executive to utilize all methods of communication to present his message, whether they be public address, television, radio, or person to person.” tion taken in class. Instructor in this special nine-week course is Henry Kingston, formerly a lecturer with the University of California Extension, radio commentator and writer over NBC, Chicago, and now serving as district representative with the National Foremen’s Institute, a division of Prentice Hall. Health Forum Will Be Slated at FJC You and Your Health, an eight-week forum on problems of current interest in the field of health, is being offered this semester by Fullerton Evening Junior College, according to John N. Reid, director of adult education. Forum classes are held each Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. in Room 89 in the Music Speech-Arts Building on the Fullerton Union High School campus.
